Eagles from page 5
Jenna Olson was one of the Eagles’ top scorers this season. She rifled in four goals against Alemany, including this one in the fourth quarter.
The opening day ceremonial first pitch was thrown by longtime
umpire John Ziello.
It’s a family affair as Clara Brown proudly wears her Jayhawks
uniform and is joined by her parents Celeste and Kirk and brother
Wilson on her first opening day.
Emily Wilkinson scores one of her three goals against Alemany.
El Segundo Little League President Lance Giroux is flanked by Holden Coulter on his left and Scot Nicol, Jr. on the right, saying to the
parents that time goes so quickly.
Vista Murrieta (17-3-7) yesterday and a win
would propel them into the quarterfinals on
Saturday at a site to be determined. The
girls completed a come-from-behind 3-2 win
over Viewpoint by scoring three second half
goals. They faced Great Oak on Tuesday and
a win would send them to the next round on
Friday against the winner of second-seeded
La Quinta and California.
The girls water polo team defeated Alemany
16-10 in a game in the first round of the CIF
Southern Section Division 5 playoffs. With
the teams trading goals in the first half and
El Segundo holding a 9-7 lead, the Eagles
outscored the Warriors 7-3 in the second half
for the win. Christina Mullane led the Eagles
with six goals, while Jenna Olson was tough
inside and scored four goals. One of her goals
was set up by the team’s goalie. With time
running down in the third period, Sophia
Caravello from the net connected with Olson
for a breakaway goal. Emily Wilkinson scored
the team’s first two goals and ended with three
total. Claire Lindsey scored one goal and set up
three other scores, while Maya Weiss got into
the scoring column late in the fourth period.
In the second round, the Eagles traveled
to face Alta Loma. The Braves, who were
undefeated in league play and were 22-5
overall, scored the first goal. However, the
Eagles were not intimidated and scored the
next four goals to lead 4-1 at halftime. The
third quarter was one of the most complete
quarters of the season. Against a very good
Braves team, the Eagles scored six unanswered
goals and took a 10-1 lead. Lindsey
had an amazing game, putting away five
goals. Freshman sensation Mullane continued
to astonish opponents and had three goals.
Olson scored twice, and both Wilkinson and
Weiss had one goal each. For the second
consecutive playoff game, Caravello had 12
saves in goal.
The Eagles’ season came to an end with
a hard-fought 5-4 loss to Diamond Bar in
the quarterfinals. The Brahmas, who reached
the CIF finals a year ago but fell in double
overtime, displayed some of the best defensive
moves the Eagles had seen thus far and El
Segundo had no answer. Olson capped her
season with two goals, while Mullane and
Wilkinson each scored one goal. •
