led by as many as seven points in the second
quarter before Lawndale closed the gap and
took a brief lead. Takehara converted three free
throws and two three-pointers to close out the
second quarter and stake her team to a 30-23
lead. To start the fourth quarter, El Segundo’s
13-point lead started to wither away as Lawndale
made a run at the Eagles. Lawndale’s Kimiko
Kennedy led the frantic comeback, and her
basket inside cut the deficit to 58-54 with 15
seconds remaining. Leila Sugimoto’s steal at
the end sealed the victory for the Eagles.
The victory forced a three-way for the final
playoff berth. El Segundo was forced to play
South Torrance for a chance to face Lawndale
gain for the final spot. The Eagles just had no
answer for the Spartans and fell 63-47.
Preston Engle’s 27 Point
Effort not Enough
Preston Engle, El Segundo’s lone senior, was
honored prior to their game against Lawndale
on Senior Night. It would be a game to remember
for the two-time All-Pioneer League
guard when he scored a game-high 27 points.
It would be the lone bright spot for the Eagles.
El Segundo’s season ended on a sour note
with their loss to Lawndale. After a close
first quarter, Lawndale went on to outpace El
Segundo and knock the Eagles out of a possible
post-season berth.
Are You Ready
for Some Football?
The Super Bowl is Sunday at nearby SoFi
Stadium. But getting a ticket might be tough,
if not a pricey one. If you can’t afford the
$500 parking or the $5200 nosebleed tickets,
then you’re in luck if you want your football
fix. The Women’s Football Alliance is the
largest, longest-running, and most competitive
women’s tackle football league in the world,
and an exhibition game is slated for Friday
night at El Segundo High School.
The California Crush women’s professional
football team and the Kern Valley Crusaders
will play an exhibition game at Hazeltine Field
on Friday at 7 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults
and $5 for students and girls 12 and under are
free with a parent. •
indicated, and the Eagles finished undefeated
in Pioneer League play.
The Eagles were fortunate enough to play
a better non-league schedule to help prepare
them for a long post-season run in the CIF
playoffs. They faced the Palisades Dolphins,
the top-ranked City Section Division 1 team,
and came away with a relatively easy 13-7
win. In the season finale, the Eagles played
host to the Mira Costa Mustangs and came
away with an exciting 11-9 win over the Bay
League champions.
Against Palisades, the Eagles sprinted to a
3-0 first-quarter lead before the Dolphins made
it close by halftime. Emmie Ramirez scored
on a high lob shot and assisted on a goal by
Alyssa Mullane to make it 5-1. Avary Torres
fed Stephanie Rodriquez for the final score in
the second quarter to give her team a 6-3 lead
at halftime. Ramirez scored two more goals
in the third quarter, including one after a shot
clock violation by the Dolphins. She took the
ball the distance and fired her shot from close
range into the net for a 9-4 El Segundo lead.
In the fourth period, the Eagles’ pressure on
defense created havoc for the high-scoring
Palisades team, and El Segundo came away
with the win.
Mira Costa in both teams’ final tune-up before
the playoffs was just what each team needed. It
was a physical pace of play that the Mustangs
like to employ versus a finesse style the Eagles
play. This was a close contest from the start
that neither team held more than a two-goal
advantage. Avary Torres’ two first-quarter goals
sparked the Eagles’ 3-2 lead. But Mira Costa
scored three unanswered in a row, including
Gwen Pidd’s goal to give the Mustangs a 5-3
lead. The Eagles used their crisp passes to set
up two scores before halftime. The first one
was set up by a pass from Nicole Alpert to
Emmie Ramirez for a score. The next one was
Alyssa Mullane’s pass to an open Torrez, who
rocketed a shot past Mustang goalie Bailey
Tibbetts to tie the game 5-5 before halftime.
In the second half, head coach Nila Ward
instructed her team to fight through the adversity
of the questionable officiating and the physical
game the Mustangs were playing. The result was
three goals scored by Ramirez, three saves by
Kendall Donahue in goal, and four takeaways
by the defense. With the score tied at 8-8 entering
the fourth quarter, the Eagles pressured the
Mustangs on defense and held Costa’s offense
to a few shot attempts. Avary Torrez gave the
Eagles the lead for good with a two-meter
goal to give her team a 10-9 advantage with
3:40 remaining. Evelyn Hale’s pass to Ramirez

set up the clincher with thirty seconds in the
contest to make it 11-9. Stephanie Rodriquez
iced the game with a steal with thirty seconds
to play, and the Eagles held on for the win.
Soccer Teams to
Advance to CIF Playoffs
The girls’ soccer team finished second in
the Pioneer League behind top-ranked West
Torrance. The Eagles will, however, advance to
the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs
with their convincing 18-0 win over Lawndale
in the regular season finale. Ten different
players scored for the Eagles, led by Chelsie
Charles’ four goals. Arianna Goitam had a hat
trick three goals, Ciara Doggett and Michaela
Turner chipped in with two goals each, and
goals by Elizabeth Kapoor, Tyler Matlosz,
Erin Rifkin, Jaden Fode, Annika Klishnevich,
Shelby Lyon and Sarah Bedoyan.
The Eagles open up the defense of their CIF
Championship on Saturday.
The boys’ soccer team’s season continues with
an expected berth in the CIF Southern Section
Division 3 playoffs. The Eagles have turned
around their season after losing six straight to
win their last three matches including a 5-0
win over Lawndale to end their regular season.
The win assured the Eagles of finishing third in
the Pioneer League and a spot in the playoffs.
The Eagles dominated the pace of play
against Lawndale and had numerous shot
attempts but came away empty. El Segundo
scored on a throw-in when Liam Moore took
the pass and knocked it in for a goal. Later
in the first half, El Segundo pushed the ball
forward, and Josh Lopez hammered one past
the defense from the middle to make it 2-0.
During stoppage time of the first half, Jacob
Meyerson found room inside and scored to
give his team a 3-0 lead. El Segundo would
score two more second-half goals and shut out
Lawndale. The Eagles will play a road game
to start their playoff schedule starting Friday.
Eagles Win Epic League Finale
but Left Out of the Playoffs
The Lady Eagles needed to win their final
league game against highly touted Lawndale
for any shot at a post-season berth. In what
could be described as the team’s best overall
game of the season, they defeated the Cardinals
and their 15-2 record, 58-54.
On Senior Appreciation night, the three seniors,
Paris Gravett, Bo Takehara and Kristina
Tsukahira, led their team to victory. The Eagles
Paris Gravett, Bo Takehara and Kristina Tsukahira were honored
on Senior Appreciation Night before their game against Lawndale.
Bo Takehara had a team high 15 points including this three-pointer
against Lawndale.
Preston Engle is surrounded by his family, friends and coaches during Senior Appreciation Night. Preston scored 27 points in his final
high school game.
