Beachfront by 2027?
Here is a thought on the future of our city
now that Centennial celebrations are over:
I believe that more access to the beach and
Pacific ocean would make a big difference
to El Segundo residents in the next 10 years.
El Segundo is facing the Pacific Ocean
on its entire 2.2 miles border, and has over
1 mile of direct beach front, yet it is not a
beach city at all: the only residents enjoying
its beach front are the Chevron refinery and
the NRG power plant. The rest belongs to
LA City, who uses it for a water sanitation
plant and a power plant, and to Manhattan
Beach who annexed El Porto in 1980.
Residents’ only access is a desolate section
of Grant Avenue leading to a pay-and-display
parking lot. Even access to the ocean-facing
dune is illegal.
I believe that through negotiations with
each of these entities by city officials, El
Segundo can gain access to over half a mile
of beachfront by 2027.
Making El Segundo a beach city will
bring residents more opportunities for daily
ocean pleasures and healthy activities. It will
also bring them pride and wealth, and I am
very confident that it will not bring crime
and corruption.
