Eagles from page 5
The win over Santa Monica gave the Lady
Eagles a measure of confidence, but they were
sent crashing to earth with a lopsided loss to
fifth-ranked Culver City that is looking for
its fifth Ocean League title in six years. El
Segundo will most likely have to win out to
secure a CIF playoff berth. The Lady Eagles
wrap up their home regular season schedule
this week having played host to Beverly Hills
last night and Lawndale on Friday night at
6 p.m. They finish their regular season at
Hawthorne next Wednesday and at Santa
Monica next Friday at 6 p.m.
Boys Basketball
The Eagles have had to play shorthanded
for a few weeks when injuries sidelined
starters Miles Jones (leg) and Michael Lynch
(concussion). The rest of the Ocean League
teams have taken advantage of the Eagles’
misfortunes. El Segundo fell to Santa Monica
and were dismantled by Culver City.
Against Samo, the Eagles actually held
a 9-5 lead after the first period. From there
on the Vikings’ relentless zone defense and
height advantage doomed the Eagles. A 16-0
run in the second quarter forced the Eagles
out of their game plan.
The second-ranked Centaurs were at full
strength and didn’t let up in scoring 74 points.
It was the most points in a game El Segundo
had given up all season. The Eagles wrap up
therir regular season home schedule Friday
night against Lawndale at 7:30 p.m.
Boys Soccer
The Eagles and Santa Monica came into
their matchup both 4-0 in league play. So
with so much on the line, this game would
turn out to be a chippy one that the Eagles
would lose 2-0. The Vikings’ game plan
worked with a better passing attack and relentless
pressure. After a scoreless first half,
the Vikings scored two goals -- the first one
by Jaylen Erhalon off a corner kick. Then
Nathaniel DeRose scored on an assist from a
pass. Eagle goalie James Amerault was under
pressure all game long and made seven saves.
Denis Vezina on the attack.
Eagle goalie James Amerault was under pressure all game long and makes one of seven saves against Santa Monica.
Former El Segundo Eagles Nigel and Lars Nootbaar faced each
other in the USC Alumni game.
El Segundo rebounded with a 6-4 win over
Culver City and has all but wrapped up a
CIF playoff spot. The Eagles improved to 5-1
in the Ocean League and with a win over
Beverly Hills yesterday or Lawndale at home
on Friday at 5 p.m., they can do no worse
than second place and a CIF playoff berth.
Girls Soccer
After starting 3-0-1 in league play the
Lady Eagles dropped a 5-0 decision to Santa
Monica and a 2-0 loss to Culver City. They
are still in contention for a third place finish,
but will need to get wins over Beverly Hills
and Lawndale on the road and Hawthorne at
home next Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
Names in the News
Former Eagle standout baseball players
played in their alumni game at USC. Alberto
Concepcion (1999) and Nigel Nootbaar (2011)
played for their former college team and Lars
Nootbaar (2015) played for his current collegiate
team in the annual USC alumni game.
Nigel pitched to his younger brother Lars
and the count went full after two questionable
pitches were called balls. Nigel got his
brother to ground out to the first baseman. •
