EL SEGUNDO HERALD January 31, 2019 Page 3 Eagles Soaring from Troop 267 By Gregg McMullin The Boy Scouts of America have been around a long time. The first Eagle Scout, the highest rank in scouting, was earned on Aug. 21, 1912 by Arthur R. Eldred of Oceanside, New York. El Segundo started a chapter of the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 267, and on Nov. 12, 1928, George Eason became the troop’s first Eagle Scout. Ninety years later, Troop 267 celebrated its 89th Eagle Scout. To become an Eagle Scout isn’t an easy task. It is estimated that just two percent of all boys entering Boy Scouts advance and achieve the most prestigious rank. Each Eagle Scout will have earned the Scout Rank, Tender Foot, Second Class, First Class, Star Scout, Life Scout and culminate by earning their Eagle Scout rank all before they turn 18 years old. To imagine that Troop 267 has had 89 scouts earn their Eagle rank is an achievement Aiden Johnson, David Tinoco, Sam Loose and A.J. Rodriguez pose after earning their Eagle rank at their Court of Honor. not many other troops can boast. When you consider that this troop resides in a small community like El Segundo, it’s even more of an accomplishment. Troop 267 could promote some 15 scouts within 18 months. Former Scout Master Steve Kigawa believes one reason for so many scouts’ advancements is the support from the community and parents. “There is so much parent support to be active with their son’s scouting career,” he said. “And the community and schools get involved in the Eagle project that benefits everybody.” Current Scoutmaster Eric Kari says the recent success of promoting so many Eagle Scouts of Troop 267 can be traced to former Committee and Camp Chair Karen Walker. “While her husband Tom was the Scoutmaster, Karen developed and held meetings for the ‘Path to Eagle’ and wrote the book on the process of becoming an Eagle Scout,” he said. Troop 267 welcomed four new Eagle Scouts including Aiden Johnson, David Tinoco, Sam Loose and Arturo “AJ” Rodriguez. Each spent over a 100 hours of time developing and making a unique Eagle project that would benefit different parts of our community and schools. Aiden Johnson knew the need for a storage shed for the El Segundo Little League Challenger Division and built one. David Tinoco built needed shelving for the choir at the El Segundo United Methodist Church. Sam Loose built a trophy case for El Segundo High School that will house the array of trophies and awards the marching band has won. AJ Rodriguez restored the Mychal’s Learning Center Garden for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Two others scouts were honored back in October when Brent and Troy Dyckman achieved their Eagle rank. Troy spent some 105 hours developing and working on his Eagle project. The community can view the fruits of Troy’s labor each day walking or driving down Main Street and looking at the El Segundo Church Directory. It took Brent 130 hours to develop, supervise and build a garden for the El Segundo Middle School that each student will benefit from going forward. As a part of the agreement, brokered by AEG Global Partnerships, the Kings and HockeyShot built a state-of-theart “Off-Ice Training Center” at the team’s practice facility, Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo. The space features a multi-sport training area and three hockey shooting lanes. The Off-Ice Training Center opened its doors to the public on Monday, Jan. 28. The training center will be used by the LA Kings and Ontario Reign in addition to the Jr. Kings. It will also be available for private groups and open for public use. This is the first time that HockeyShot has partnered with an NHL team to build a training center. The creation of the Off-Ice Training Center is aimed at improving skill development and will feature 1,200 square-feet of HockeyShot’s Extreme Glide Synthetic Ice across three shooting lanes. The resilient technology of the synthetic ice can withstand rain, snow, and hot sun. It’s also suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. As the presenting sponsor of the facility, HockeyShot has a designated retail space where visitors have the opportunity to sample and purchase equipment aimed at helping players with their technique-focused, off-ice training progress.  The Off-Ice Training Center is located at Toyota Sports Center, 555 N. Nash Street, El Segundo. It will be open seven days a week from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. For information about the center and pricing, please go to http://www. lakings.com/trainingcenter. – Source: LA Kings • of smaller federal refunds and more questions about standard deductions under the revised tax code and which write-offs are still in play. Taxpayers expecting refunds - a practice known as the “Uncle Sam Savings Plan” - may be disappointed. However, a deal with tax Software companies and the government could soften the blow.  The Internal Revenue Service estimates 100 million U.S. taxpayers can file their federal returns for free this year because of a deal the government has with the leading tax software companies. In exchange for not releasing its own free tax software, the IRS cut a deal with software developers, including TurboTax, to let taxpayers prepare and file their federal taxes at no cost.  The arrangement between the revenuecollection agency and private industry will run through the fall of 2021. The software partners include H&R Block, TurboTax, Credit Karma Tax, TaxAct and FreeTax USA. Uncertainty about the new law laws should boost interest in the free offer.  Taxpayers who claim $66,000 or less of income after deductions for last year are eligible for the free software and filing. Individuals and couples with more than $66,000 of adjusted income are able to prepare, but not electronically file their returns online. Instead, they must download, print and mail their federal returns. This public-private partnership began in 2002 and has some new features.  Active-duty military personnel in the South Bay with incomes of $66,000 or less may use any Free File software product offering a military option, the IRS said last month as it struggled to get ready for the Jan. 28 start of tax season. The government shutdown left the IRS severely shorthanded because thousands of agency and field employees were furloughed, waiting to be called back to work. The top official at the IRS called the filefor free choice a great partnership with the software developers. This is the first year taxpayers and their preparers will apply new tax brackets and standard deductions. Past filers may notice additional features while taxpayers who haven’t tried Free File should think about it, says IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said. “This is a great year for people to consider using this option for preparing their taxes,” he believes. After all, why pay for something that’s being given away for nothing? That’s the substance of the deal between the IRS and TurboTax and other branded companies that sell their software to taxpayers from late January through April 15. The IRS estimates this freebie offer can be used by 70 percent of taxpayers. Californians have a similar free option from the Franchise Tax Board, too.  Workers, families with children, first-time See Filing Software, page 10
