Troop 762 and
Troop 410 Take a Hike Please Help Find Memento

Troop 762 (Boy Scout Troop) and their
sister troop 410 went on a training hike to
Camp Hoegee this past weekend. The boys’
troop is known as a high adventure troop
and tries to hike once a month on the 3rd
weekend of the month. They start slowly and
have their sights set on Mt. Whitney. Our girls
love high adventure, and two of them were
able to make it to the hike this last weekend
on January 18-19. After checking the local
weather (cold!), animal activity, elevation
changes, and routes, we set out. We drove to
Chantry Flats in the mountains above Sierra
Madre, CA. From there, we decided to take
the more challenging Upper Trail to Lower
Trail with the dreaded Heart Attack Hill as
a final challenge. The hike was gorgeous,
and even though the sheltering foliage made
it a little chilly, the physical activity quickly
had us peeling off layers to adjust our hiking
comfort. We saw some birds, several squirrels,
and quite a few dogs.
One fellow hiker said that his Husky had
been trying to catch a deer. We got to camp
early and decided to “peak.” So, we set out
for Mt. Zion. We all made it! Woot! Out of
the tree line, the temperature rise was very
evident and warm!! That night the temperature
plummeted, but because we were prepared, we
were warm and comfortable. We had expected
to encounter bears and had made our bear cans
and kitchens accordingly. The only sounds of
bears were the adults slumbering. A group
near us may have had an impact, too. They
were playing loud music and stayed up very
late - a great example of what not to do. In
addition, our troops carried out five bags of
trash that they had left. Leaving no trace and
having good outdoor manners in action. On the
way out, The Hill was in our thoughts. The
many water crossings on the Lower Trail were
both gorgeous and uneventful. The scouts got
to stretch their orienteering skills by taking
turns leading the trail line and supervising the
breaks and the crossings. (All of the troops’
members that left made it back safely, by the
way.) Great job, Scouters! The hill came. We
took a small break for water. Start the trail.
Said in Dory’s voice, “Just keep hiking, and
hiking, and hiking....” We made it! No heart
attacks (check the adults) yep, yep, yep, we
made it. Down the hill, on the freeway, and
we are back to El Segundo for the traditional
meal at In-n-Out! Such a great group and
such a great experience. Come out and join
us next time! •

Day 1 Along the Upper Trail.
Scouter Leila, Scoutmaster Raley, 1st Class Mia on the Mt. Zion Trail.
I’m searching for a couple that came to
my father’s and my garage sale on Saturday
January 18, on the corner of Penn/Palm. The
couple is really nice and the father rode an
electric bike with his younger son, about
two years old, to the sale. His wife, who is
expecting another child, drives a large black
extended SUV. They bought a few sports balls
(baseballs, football, volleyball) some DVDs, a
wagon and a police teddy bear. My father and
I didn’t mean to sell that police teddy bear
since it’s very special to both of us. It was
given to my dad when he retired as a police
officer and it has a very special meaning to
me. I am hoping to exchange another teddy
bear we have for that police bear. Please let me
know if anyone has any information regarding
this couple so we can get the bear back! They
are residents of El Segundo and said they live
close to Richmond Street School.
