School Board Meets Twice to
Blueprint the Road Forward
this fall -- including four first place honors
in Western Band Association competitions.
Gooden emailed prior to the meeting, “We
are very proud of the Eagle marching band.
They have worked really hard. It is always
a pleasure to celebrate the accomplishments
of our students.”
Superintendent Dr. Melissa Moore said
she also was extremely proud of the accomplishments
of the current band members.
The seniors in the band were spotlighted by
Gooden at the beginning of the meeting,
and they then posed for a group photo with
Board members.
After a brief report from the Board’s
student representative Mathew Tritasavit, El
Segundo Education Foundation Chairman Neil
Cadman took to the presentation podium to
note the upcoming Feb.1 fundraiser “Guys
Night Out.” District Executive Director of
Educational Services Marisa Janicek then

Advancing to the CIF Southern Section
playoffs is every athlete’s goal. All of the
El Segundo High School winter teams have
put themselves in a position to reach that
goal. Winning a league title all but assures
a postseason berth, but placing second, third
or fourth oftentimes gives teams an invite
to the dance.
Lady Eagles’ Team Effort Guiding
Them Towards League Title
The girls’ basketball program had yet to
start a league schedule going 6-0. By sweeping
Santa Monica and Hawthorne, the team
is indeed 6-0 in Ocean League play and
16-7 overall. The program has yet to win
Malia Hui led the Eagles with 17 points, including five three-pointers.
a league title, but that could be in reach by
winning this week’s games against Beverly
Hills and Culver City.
Reese Jones led her team to a big 46-29
victory over Santa Monica to run El Segundo’s
league-leading record to 5-0. The Vikings were
thought to be one of the league favorites, but
the Eagles played a flawless defensive game
in the second and third quarters. The Eagles
led by 18 points to start the fourth quarter
and came away with the relatively easy win.
The Eagles have made it a point to be
an unselfish team and make it truly a team
effort. Jones, who had 14 points and seven
rebounds, was the recipient of numerous passes
that were converted into points. Defense was
once again a strength and the Eagles came
up with 15 steals, with 11 of those converted
into points. It was a signature win over a team
that knocked them out of a playoff berth a
season ago in a tie-breaker game.
On Senior Night, in front of a full house,
Malia Hui, Kayla Smith-Petty, Lydia Telahun,
Remicia Germeille and Kailea Lee were all
honored. The four-year Malia Hui reminded
the crowd why she has been such a commodity
for the Eagles’ program. After Hawthorne
scored the first five points of the game, Hui
scored the next five points to lead the Eagles
to a 51-25 win. She connected on 60 percent
of her three-point attempts and ended with
a game-high 17 points.
In the second quarter, Hui and Story Noble’s
back-to-back three-pointers gave the Eagles a
22-10 lead. Hui passed on an open shot and
fed Kristin Tsubaki, who sank a three-pointer
and extended the lead to 28-10.

The El Segundo School Board met on
Tuesday evening, the first regularly scheduled
session after the holiday break. And the
members did double duty, commencing a
short open meeting at 5 p.m. to recap items
from a special meeting that took place on
Saturday, Jan. 12. The goal of the special
meeting was to foster Board governance,
focusing on specific characteristics that will
help the members work cohesively as they
move forward to implement El Segundo
Unified School District’s long-range facilities
master plan. Meanwhile, Tuesday’s regular
agenda featured multiple special presentations
and consideration of more than 40 action
and consent items.
Dr. Melissa Gooden, the acting principal
at El Segundo High School, was the first
presenter, giving kudos to the marching
band, which has garnered recognition for its
recent exploits. The band, under the tutelage
of Robert Soto and Edie Rice, consists of 71
members and has garnered multiple awards

El Segundo Unified Hosts Korean Students
for Week of Educational, Cultural Exchange
Last week, a group of 28 Korean elementary
and middle school students had a rare
opportunity to visit the El Segundo Unified
School District (ESUSD) for a weeklong
exchange tour.
The collaboration among educators from
the two countries was meant to afford the
students from both schools an opportunity
to participate in short-term exchange programs
that expand student access to different
cultures. It also provided opportunities for
the teachers and administration to experience
and gain greater understanding of
