My Job
I have worked for Dynasty Footwear (DF),
a privately-owned company, for 20 years. I
currently serve as Executive Vice President of
Sales & Operations. DF has been headquartered
in El Segundo, on the corner of Maple
Ave. and P.C.H., since 1997. DF designs and
sells footwear to all major U.S. retailers. DF
produces footwear for adults and children and
is one of the largest private brand companies
in the industry. The footwear industry has been
very good to me. It is very entrepreneurial at its
core and rewards those who put forth the effort.
I have been fortunate enough to have had the
chance to see many places in the world that I
would otherwise not have had an opportunity
to see through this business.
Hobbies
I (try to) live a healthy lifestyle and exercise
regularly. I will squeeze in a round of golf
whenever the opportunity allows. During the
summer, I play in the El Segundo Recreation
& Park’s co-ed softball league. I have been a
proud member of the Standard Mules for the
past three seasons.
Volunteerism
As our children grew, I coached their teams
in El Segundo Little League, El Segundo
Girls Softball and AYSO. I joined the board of
directors for E.S.L.L. and E.S.G.S., including
serving as board president for each organization.
In 2018, I joined the El Segundo Education
Foundation board and was appointed by the
current City Council to the Economic Development
Advisory Committee. I also have worked
with the School District on the recent bond
measure and was appointed to the Citizens
Oversight Committee this past year. I have
enjoyed my time working in these varied positions.
It has taught me not just about the city,
but also a lot about myself and the importance
of civic duty and volunteerism.
Why did you decide
to run for City Council?
Firstly, I think our current City Council has
done an amazing job. Many issues were kicked
down the road to them and they have done a
great job of handling each challenge. For me
the short of it is this: I love this town. It is my
home and the only home my kids have ever
known. I am proud of our past and present,
and very excited about our future. We are a
small town with big businesses all around us.
The issues we face as a city are complicated
and diverse, and, I believe, my life experiences
will be useful in meeting and overcoming those
challenges. I have no personal agenda – only
to serve my community the best I can.
Once a Councilmember,
on what top three items will
you be focused?
Housing – Housing is going to be a front
and center issue for not only El Segundo, but
all of California in the coming years. The
challenge for us is going to be how we evolve
as a city, yet maintain our community at the
same time. First and foremost, it is imperative
that we protect our single-family home neighborhoods.
We do not want to be turning R1s
into R2s and R3s (single structure to duplex/
multi-family units). At the same time, we need
to look at how we can produce more housing
opportunities for the diverse income levels that
make up our community. We have created a
tremendous amount of job opportunities in our
city and will continue to do so in the future.
We now need to turn our attention to creating
housing opportunities for our residents.
I believe that we can accomplish both goals
and become stronger as a city and community.
Structural Deficit – This is a fancy term that
simply means that in the coming years our
recurring expenses will exceed our recurring
income. Unfunded pension liabilities are a big
issue for not only El Segundo, but for the vast
majority of California cities. We must find ways
to continue to pay down our liability and, at
the same time, generate more revenue. What
we don’t want to do is look for a short-term
fix that results in a long-term problem.
Community Infrastructure – This past
year our Council implemented its first-ever
capital improvement program. This threeyear
plan aims to rehabilitate community
buildings such as the Plunge, the Teen Center,
City Hall, Park Vista, the Library and
Recreation Park. This program is vital to not
only the long-term health of our city, but also
the pride we have in our community. The
El Segundo Aquatics Center is of particular
importance to me. I fear that if we do not operate
this new facility at its intended capacity,
we will lose the advantage of this incredible
resource. The previous Council was faced with
tough decisions after several years of financial
deficits at The Lakes and I do not want to
see us facing a similar circumstance in five
years because we failed to act sooner. I am
passionate about making the Aquatics Center
a long-term success and want to ensure we do
not neglect it’s management today.
Finish the statement “I’d
like the community to know...”
...I am here to represent their wishes, desires
and dreams for what they want El Segundo
to be.”
...I will always act in what I feel is in the
best interest of the city and its residents. You
may not always agree with what I decide, but
you always know what I was thinking and
why I made the decisions I made.”
What is Your Favorite?
Sports Team: Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics,
Patriots (quite sure that lost me some votes).
TV Show: Im addicted to all of those
Alaska and “Off the Grid” Shows. Our TV
is usually tuned to Discovery, History, Travel
or Cooking shows.
Movie: We see a lot of movies and not
sure I can pinpoint one. However, I have
seen “Tombstone” and “Gladiator” roughly 25
times each and will probably watch it 25 more.
Book: So many great ones, but was introduced
to “ The Hobbit” and “Lord of the
Rings” way back in High School and have
re-read them several times.
Meal: I am a very adventurous eater and
love many dishes and types of cuisine; cannot
pinpoint one.
Place to Travel: Anywhere I haven’t yet been.
Quote: “If you don’t know where you are going,
any road will get you there.” (Lewis Carroll). •

the estate, you may file with the court
a Request for Special Notice (form DE-

that “we appreciate having a clean audit,”
which augurs well for the ESUSD’s current
and upcoming financial solvency.
The quickly paced meeting moved on to
the adoption of consent agenda items, which
included the approval of a consultant agreement
with the National Career Day Network
to coordinate and implement a Career Day for
El Segundo High School students, that will
take place on March 5, with Career Readiness
Coordinator Linal Harada serving as the contact
for local business entities who may want
to participate as guest speakers. Additional
items included an agreement with Jon Moffat
to conduct cyber-safety presentations on March
11 for all interested parties and the approval for
District participation in a Los Angeles County
Office of Education vaping awareness project.
Action items were next on the agenda and
included the formal granting of approval of the
aforementioned District financial audit report,
the appointing of Lance Bustrom as the new
member to the Citizen’s Bond Oversight Committee,
the approval of the ESUSD “Goals for
the Future,” the approval of the high school’s
adoption of a new Advanced Placement World
History Textbook; and the bumping-up of pay
for certain The Learning Connection (TLC)
employees, with the California minimum wage
increase of January 1.
Dr. Moore, who has worked diligently on
the formulation of the District goals, said she
thinks those goals represent “the wisdom of all
stakeholders” involved in the process.
Next up, Moore noted events dotting the
ESUSD informational calendar, including
school-site PTA meetings and the next regularly
scheduled Board meeting, which is set
for Tuesday, Jan.28.
Board member reports followed, with Nancy
Cobb championing the District’s continued
participation in the Torrance-based So Cal
ROC program. She noted the strides being
made by So Cal ROC, but also mentioned
the necessity to continually seek funding to
support the program. Clerk Emilee Layne
talked about the progress being made at the
Richmond Street School construction site of the
new TLC facility. “We are getting there,” she
said, citing inevitable weather-related delays.
Vice-president Tracey Miller-Zarneke recapped
her recent board endeavors, citing “so
much good stuff around the Holidays,” and
gave thanks to all involved in the recent Young
Americans performances. Nishime added that
she “can’t wait to (officially) acknowledge”
all involved in the Board room refresh, and
spoke about other District projects that are on
the calendar for the beginning of 2020, as the
District ramps-up the implementation of the
Long-Range Facilities Master Plan.
In final comments, Moore talked about a
“delightful visit” she recently made to District
classrooms, noting that “our teachers are so
committed to improving their craft.” Teaching
can be isolating, she said, adding how she was
very impressed to see the continuing professional
development taking place in the District. •
