study trips and many kinds of hands-on experiments
and activities tailored to inspire the
next class of eighth graders to get involved
in math and science careers. In addition to
organizing the camp, AAUW works toward
providing a $750 scholarship funded through
corporate donations for at least one student
from each TUSD middle school.
The AAUW was founded in 1881 and has
become the country’s leading organization
dedicated to advocating equity for women and
girls through education, philanthropy, research
and advocacy. In California the AAUW has
12,000 members in 125 branches, including
the Torrance location. A group made up of
Educational Partnership Committee members
and business partners will determine which of
the nominees will attend. The School Board
will recognize any scholarship recipients
during a regular meeting in June of 2018.
Participation in Tech Trek comes at no
cost to TUSD. Persons interested in more
information on the AAUW Torrance branch
can visit https://torrance-ca.aauw.net.
The School Board also approved a Memorandum
Of Understanding (MOU) between
TUSD and Star View Adolescent Center in
an effort to expand on the available mental
health services provided to students and
families in the district. Star View Adolescent
Center is located in Torrance and provides
mental health services to teenagers in high
need. Through comprehensive mental health
treatment programs, Star View treats young
people with “severe emotional challenges
who cannot be treated effectively in other
existing community-based intensive treatment
programs.” The center provides a space for 56
patients between the ages of 12 and 17 years.
The MOU will be in effect until Oct. 31,
2018 and comes at no cost to the District.
Through the MOU, the framework for the
partnership between TUSD and Star View
Adolescent Center is established. It confirms
the commitment to set up students “to receive
needed mental health services on school
campus, thus removing a barrier for treatment
for these students and families,” according
to the School Board staff report.
Star View provides multilevel programs
that combine residential care along with
educational services that help with mental
health treatment and rehabilitation. Through
the center’s integrated programs, there is no
need to admit a student in the middle of an
acute psychiatric crisis into an unknown
setting such as a hospital. Furthermore, the
center eliminates the risk of the student not
resuming their residential placement and
abandoning treatment.
Since 1996, Star View--along with Los
Angeles County--has provided treatment to
children who have experienced severe and
complex trauma, and also for kids who have
such emotional challenges that they require a
secure environment for the intensive services
they’ll receive. Among the services provided
by the Center for Torrance students are a Psychiatric
Health Facility, Community Treatment
Facility, Day Treatment Intensive Program
and a Community Services Program. Star
View Center will provide these services for
Torrance students who have, or are eligible
for, Medi-Cal at no charge to the District. •

The other difference between the printercopier
and a 3D printer is how a digital file is
reproduced. The 3D printer creates an image
from a digital file, starting at the bottom and
working its way up.
The process has been likened to a layer
cake, where the baker lays down each layer
one at a time until the entire cake is formed.
There are videos on the Internet about 3D
printing, and the unbelievable things that
really smart people have designed, like a
fully functioning jet engine.
These car factories of the future could be
cheaper to open, according to Czinger. He says
that an auto plan could be built at one-tenth
of the half-billion cost to erect and equip.
With 3D printers running on computer-assisted
design programs, a big box warehouse could
be easily outfitted into an auto assembly
plant, Divergent’s founder says.
Divergent 3D has made a promise to its
investor that it can build a production line for
20,000 cars a year, equipped with industrialsized
3-D metal printers, laser cutters and
assembly robots, for close to $50 million.
That would allow carmakers to shave $6,700
off their production costs per vehicle, the
company estimates.
Divergent 3D expects to build prototypes
for customers next year and then open a
small-production factory in 2019 in the Los
Angeles area, according to published reports.
The company is fully funded for the research
and development work ahead, its founder
says. This technology has put Detroit and
Japanese carmakers on notice.
“Divergent will continue its strong
momentum in leading the adoption of an
economically and environmentally transformative
manufacturing solution—building safer,
stronger and more profitable eco-friendly
vehicles at mass volumes,” said Czinger,
who worked as a Wall Street banker before
launching his manufacturing venture.
Software-guided manufacturing--at the heart
of the car manufacturing revolutionaries at
Divergent--also has applications for South Bay’s
aerospace industry. Printers can make single
aircraft parts from metal or plastic, saving
time and keeping the manufacturing on site.
