TORRANCE TRIBUNE January 29, 2015 Page 9 Tartars from page 6 Olympians. Leuzinger seems like the team that is poised to run away with the Pioneer League, but South still has their opportunity to catch them in the standings. Last Friday night, the Spartans under head coach Leo Klemm, kept their winning streak alive. Since losing to Leuzinger, South has beaten Torrance and Centennial in backto back games and with a 52-40 win over the West High Warriors at West High, they pushed their streak to three. Ajeya Kukreja has been a standout player for the Spartans this year and did his job to keep things that way last week. With a game-high 18 points, Kukreja was the only player on his team in double-digit scoring leading them to a 15 point fourth quarter and a 12 point victory. For the Warriors, senior Christian Jackson led the way for the team with 15 points in the contest on 6-for-15 from the field. Teammate Josh Staffieri contributed to the effort with 10 points and 10 rebounds as the Warriors fell behind by five points at the half and simply couldn’t catch up in the third and fourth quarters combined. West has had a rough go of things in their first basketball season back in the Pioneer League this year. Despite a close 49-47 win at home against Centennial last Wednesday night, the Warriors have dropped four of their last five games and find themselves just ahead of Centennial in the Pioneer League standings. The Warriors season is far from over yet. With a late season surge West can get on a roll and make it into the playoffs. Next on the schedule for the team is a rivalry matchup with the hot-of-late Torrance Tartars before the Warriors (6-14, 1-3) take on first place Leuzinger this Friday night. The Spartans, on the other hand, will truly learn about their team with a pair of tough matchups on the slate this week. First, South will face off against North High and then finish their rivalry week off against Torrance. Get out there to support your team as the regular season finds itself slowly coming to a close. • South’s Jaryn Fajardo looking for an opening. Coach Imamura consults with his players. Claire Ogomori lifts off the ground. West won by a 31-point margin: the final score was 68-37.
