Did you put your $1,000 deposit down last year to be one of the first to get the “affordable”, game changing Tesla Model 3? Elon “tweeted” that the very first Model 3 cars are rolled off the production line this past weekend. “They, (Tesla) are like Apple in the sense that they have disrupted the auto industry and forced them faster to move to electronic vehicles,” said Tim Bajarian, a tech industry analyst. If you now decide you want a Model 3 you will have to wait a year to receive it. $36K seems not too bad of a price for a sporty looking vehicle that doesn’t have to wait in line at the Costco gas station. You will still have to look for a “charging station” when you take that family vacation up the coast to see the relatives. Heat What can I say? It has been miserable, hot and humid. Window AC units are selling fast. Ceiling fans are a help. Most people can hardly wait til the late afternoon breeze picks up to cool us off somewhat. Sleeping is a challenge when the bedroom temps make you sweat more than sleep. Separation My daughter and son-in-law found new jobs and have moved up to Roseville, CA. That means we don’t get to see our dear grandkids except when they “facetime” us. Separation from our loved ones is hard especially when they have been a big part of our lives for the past six years. Grandma is looking forward to seeing them next month when we visit them and help them move into their new home. $13,000 That is how much we raised at the Hawthorne community K9 dinner in May. The check was presented to HPD Chief Fager and designated to go in support of the K9 Unit of the HPD. A big thank you goes to the Hawthorne Presidents Council for again sponsoring the event. $1,100,000 Yep, that’s the value of the “average” house sold in the South Bay. Can you believe that house prices have risen nearly 20% in Hawthorne in the past year? It’s all about supply and demand. More people want to live here than there are houses. More people want the “cool” weather here as opposed to the valley or inland. BUT, you have to have some “loose change” to be a home buyer around here. At 20% down, you would need a cool 200K, then to qualify for a loan your combined income has to be pretty substantial. It’s too bad that right now at least, the housing market has locked out most young people and older folks from purchasing even a starter shack. People who can afford to buy are looking at Hawthorne as a bargain when compared with the prices of homes in the beach cities. It’s hard for companies to relocate here to our area when their employees would have a tough time finding housing. Historical Society Museum Moving Date The Hawthorne Historical Society will be moving into their new digs soon. There are truck loads of furniture and boxes to be moved into the new Hawthorne Museum which is located at 14100 Prairie Avenue. The building is located just north of the American Legion building on the east side of Prairie. The first of many work days is scheduled for Saturday, July 22. Able bodies are needed to move furniture and lift boxes so that the history of our great city can go on display. Good Neighbors Day and the grand opening of the Museum are planned for Saturday, September 16 at the Jim Thorpe Park site. Call Danny at 310-643-6139 if you would like to get involved or with any questions. Resolve to Rise There will be a “Right Touch” workshop on Saturday, July 29th at 10 a.m. at the Funship Learning Preschool sponsored by Resolve to Rise. The workshop is meant for children and their parents to learn how to prevent sexual abuse. Please RSVP by calling 310-465-86522 or go to eventbrite.com and search: the Right Touch.
