You’ll have no trouble staying busy, as the south bay cities have a cornucopia of concerts, arts events, classes and activities all designed to keep your summer safe, exciting, and dynamic. Just jump on in and find your passion. El Segundo To beat the summer heat and traffic, hop on El Segundo’s shuttle to the shoreline. It’s the only beach shuttle in the area; from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. you can ride to and from the Joslyn Center to Grand Beach in El Porto. Seniors ride free with your recreation ID ; it’s $1 each way for everyone else. Can’t beat that deal! If it’s music that makes your summer swing, then El Segundo’s got just the thing. The Summer in the Park Series kicks off at Library Park with three, count ‘em, Saturday’s worth of sounds. Plan on catching at least one, on July 7 or July 24, or the final offering August 7. Arrive early, the shows open at 4 p.m. and are known to be a draw. For information, try 310-524-2700. Hawthorne The Hawthorne Parks Program is up and running with six fully-staffed parks open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Recreation leaders are on hand to lead team sports, arts and crafts and organized games. This is a drop-in program; participants over the age of seven can come and go as they please, while those 7 years of age and younger must be accompanied by a guardian. Information may be had at (310) 349-1640. The Betty Ainsworth Sports offers 5-day Sports Clinics. Youngsters 8-15 years olds can get intensive coaching in volleyball, soccer and basketball for a nominal fee. Location is 3851 El Segundo Boulevard. Call the number above for age groups, dates and times. Summer Swim Programs at the 12501 Inglewood Avenue pool offer water activities for all ages. Recreational swim runs $1 or $2. Check the calendar for exact times and dates through August 21. For formal instruction in water fitness, junior lifeguard, diving or beginning swimming, call 310-970-7228. From toddlers (with parents) to seniors, there’s a class to fit your needs and budget. Pick a class and register at the Memorial Center at 3901 W El Segundo Boulevard. For those more inclined to artistic fare, Hawthorne has you covered. The Lark Gallery at 12609 Hawthorne Boulevard hosts “Yin & Yang,” an exhibit of works which explore the “eternal journey” between opposing forces. The exhibit runs July 2 through July 23. An opening reception will take place on Saturday, August 2 from 6-9 p.m. Art meets the outdoors July 16, as Lark Gallery opens its doors for the annual Hawthorne Art Walk. Come to browse through paintings, prints, and small objets d’arts from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., inside and out the gallery. Both events are free and some art walk items may be for purchase. Hawthorne will cap off July with a Block Party and Picnic at Ramona Park on July 30 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., hosted by the Ramona Neighborhood Association. Lawndale Bring the tots for a cool down session at the Jane Addams Park wading pool. Open from noon until 4 p.m., every Monday – Friday, July 1 through August 26, the wading pool is designed for two year olds through six year olds, accompanied by parental units. Lawndale operates six public parks, and the Hofmann Community Center offers a variety of classes and programs with nearly daily activities and a focus on seniors. Registration is required. Also in Lawndale, when summer fun is winding down elsewhere, mark your calendars September 24 for the Lawndale Blues and Jazz Music Festival. At Jane Addams, starting at 11 a.m., enjoy a car show, delicious food and of course the music. Inglewood Splash down at Edward Vincent Jr. Park now through September 5. General swim is offered Wednesday through Sunday, from 12:30 until 4 p.m., for the hefty price of $1! Swim classes and other activities are also ongoing at the park. Summer day camp is now in session, with a second session starting July 18. Come out every first Saturday, all year long and get fit with the Althea Moses Fitness Club. New members are welcome to join Olympic Champion and Morningside High Alumna Althea Moses, who shows up every session to lead a walk for fitness. Designed for seniors, but all are welcome. 9-10 a.m. Edward Vincent Jr Park is located at 700 Warren Lane. Manhattan Beach Music continues all summer in Polliwog Park, with the Concerts in the Park series running from July 10 through September 4. That’s nine straight weeks of marvelous, musical Sunday afternoons. Check the city’s website for info on the featured bands; all concerts are from 5-7 p.m. For the artist within, try the free Family Art Workshops held every first and third Saturday at the MB Art Center on 1560 MB Boulevard. Walk-ins are welcome to register at the desk. Come early; the two-hour class starts at 2:30 p.m. Of special note: a treat for lovers of the theatre. Shakespeare By The Sea will mount “Othello,” Friday, August 12 at 7 p.m. One of the Bard’s most iconic works, it’s sure to be a crowd pleaser. So pack a picnic, a blanket, and some family or friends, and get on down to Polliwog Park. Check the city’s website calendar for a complete listing of summer happenings including senior day trips, arts and crafts classes and the annual open tournaments in volleyball and tennis coming the second and third weekends in July. Torrance If you live in or around the city of Torrance, you’ll have no trouble filling those long summer days with a plethora of interesting activities. A partial list includes classes in bird watching, art and wood crafts, book clubs, day camps, gardening, pajama parties, reading workshops, sports, origami and nature walks. You get the picture. Look to the city’s website for a full listing; it’s way too numerous to give adequate space here. A few highlights worth putting on your to-do list: On July 22, a two-week run of the acclaimed “Fiddler on the Roof” begins at the James R. Armstrong Theatre, 3330 Civic Center Drive. An Antiques Street Faire on July 24, starts early, 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. The location is 1317 Sartori. For information call 310-328-6107. Even opera lovers will find something on the menu: Mezzo-soprano Silvia Vasquez is in concert July 30 at the Katy Geissert Civic Center Library, 3301 Torrance Boulevard. The Siale Festival 2016, celebrating the Pacific Island culture and community, launches August 20 at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center. A full list of activities can be found at TFSCA.org Dancers celebrate Pacific Island heritage, at Siafe festival in Torrance Have a Safe and Happy Summer Season! • Grape and Spinach Salad with Raspberry Balsamic Dressing Ingredients • 8 cups fresh baby spinach, washed • 4 1/2 cups California grapes • 1 1/4 cups mandarin orange segments (drained, if using canned) • 1/3 cup thinly sliced red onion • 3/4 cup bottled light balsamic vinegar and oil dressing • 1/4 cup orange juice • 3 tablespoons raspberry jam • 3/4 cup crunchy chow mein noodles Preparation 1. Place spinach in large salad bowl. Top with grapes, oranges and onion. 2. Whisk together dressing, orange juice and jam. Pour over salad and toss until greens are coated with dressing. Top with crunchy noodles. Serving suggestion: Add noodles just before serving to maintain crunchy texture.
