Hawthorne Happenings
Holly Park Homeowner’s
Association Pancake
Breakfast
The Holly Park Homeowners will
once again be hosting a pancake
breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, June
16th at Olivet Lutheran Church. Mark
your calendars for this fun event. It’s
the day before Fathers Day so take your dad
out for breakfast a day early.
May Gray – June Gloom
Whatever you call it, my ol’ lady don’t
like it. I work in Long Beach and it was
sunny in the LB the other day, but not here
in Hawthorne. Linda informed me that it was
just a miserable, gray, overcast, depressing
day. One of the worse days in her memory.
She is a SoCal native. She loves her sunshine.
She doesn’t drink beer so I really didn’t know
what to tell her. She had a cold one (day)
and she didn’t like it.
Over Estimated
I thought that I had 19 loyal readers out
there reading this stuff each week. However, I
only had 15 RSVP for my thank you party that
will be held on Saturday, June 9th beginning
at 5 p.m. at the Pizza Show on Hawthorne
Blvd. The deadline to RSVP is Thursday June
7th. There is a $10 charge for your food and
drink which you can pay that evening. (Okay,
I’m cheap. If my eight years of columns are
not worth $10 bucks, then come anyway and
be a freeloader, just make sure you RSVP.)
Please use the special code when reserving
your spot to prove that you are one of my
readers. The code words are: “Have A Cold
One!” Email me at norbhuber@gmail.com.
No Replacement Necessary
In an effort to save city funds and to avoid
a messy appointment process, the city council
pretty much decided not to appoint a replacement
for me during the interim period between
my departure on June 12th and the seating of
a new clerk at the first meeting in December.
They essentially left my responsibilities on my
City Clerk staff. Monica Dicrisci, Deputy City
Clerk, and Diane Cucalon, “my favorite” city
clerk assistant, will fill my shoes very nicely.
They are the reason that I have looked good
doing whatever I do at the council meetings.
They are the ones who do ALL of the work.
I have been the face and figurehead of
our office, but the real work is theirs.
We’ve always said that we are a team,
“when I look good we all look good”.
Well, both of them are better looking
than yours truly, so the council meetings
will roll along just fine.
My Life in the City
of Good Neighbors
My days are numbered here in Hawthorne,
so in the last few columns before my departure,
I would like to reflect on my Hawthorne life
with this rambling installment: As I exited
the 405 at El Segundo Blvd on August 15,
1977, I really did not know what I was getting
myself into. I was moving to my first job out
of college, an eighth grade teaching position
at Trinity Lutheran School on Inglewood Avenue
in Hawthorne, CA. All of my earthly
possessions were packed into the back of my
brand new, dark gold, Toyota Corolla. I had
never been to SoCal in my life, never south
of San Francisco. For six summers during my
college years, I had worked on the Olympic
Peninsula of Washington State as a “logger”
for Simpson Timber Company. Hawthorne
seemed like worlds away from the soggy, rainy
back woods of the tall timber country. My new
boss, principal/Reverend Sherman Korshavn
handed me a copy of the Daily Breeze and
told me to look at the classified listings for an
apartment. Back then my pay was $800 per
month but the studio pad that I found over on
Cerise Avenue was only $140 per month. It
took a while to get acclimatized to this new
exciting, sunny environ. Body surfing in the
warm water and waves of the Pacific Ocean
at the end of Rosecrans was great. The salt
in my mouth didn’t bother me. The scantily
clad California girls was an eye opener to this
young hick that really never had a need to use
sun screen since we rarely saw the sun in the
NorthWest. It was hard to believe that a 22
year old young man from small town America
would be so lucky as to come to really live
where the Beach Boys songs came to life. God
only Knows, Surfin USA, Wouldn’t it be Nice,
and Wish They All Could be California Girls
all made me feel proud to live in Hawthorne.
