Japanese Basebal I had always heard that the Japanese people are crazy about baseball. So, on the last day of our trip to Japan, I was able to attend the Giants vs the Swallows game played in the Tokyo Dome. With 13 million people, Tokyo has enough population to support five major league baseball teams. The game itself looked very much like a game here in the USA. However, there were some differences. The first being that almost all of the fans actually watched the game. There was no getting up to go to the snack stand and missing half of the game. Very few fans went to buy souvenirs until after the game was completed. There were organized crowd cheers or chants for the team at bat throughout the game. The visiting fans all sat together in a designated area out in left field. There were cheerleaders leading the cheers between innings. No litter was thrown under the seats, no spilled beer on the stadium steps. The stands were kept clean. After the game the winning team, the Giants, stood between home plate and first base and took a bow. Of course there were cold ones for sale. (I’ve been asked if this was a city sponsored trip. No, I have looked at my credit card statement and I can definitely say that I paid 100% of all expenses. We consider ourselves blessed to be able to travel and see other parts of the world.) Candyland Carnival Hawthorne High School is sponsoring a carnival this Thursday thru Sunday, April 23-26 out on their football field. Unlimited ride tickets are $15 presale and $20 at the gate.
