Page 2 February 26, 2015 Briefs SBCCOG General Assembly Meeting The South Bay Cities Council of Governments will explore the dynamics of South Bay neighborhoods at its 16th Annual SBCCOG Annual General Assembly on Friday, February 27, 2015 from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm at the Juanita Millender- McDonald Community Center in Carson. The Assembly will examine what makes a good neighborhood, what is our vision for the neighborhood of the future and the challenges that cities face. After networking with legislators and visiting exhibits hosted by our sponsors and South Bay cities, the program starts at 10:00 am. In advance of the Assembly, the SBCCOG invites South Bay residents to express what they like about their neighborhood and what they believe defines a neighborhood. Applications Solicited for High School Japanese Exchange Program Japan America Society of Southern California (JASSC) is accepting applications from high school students to participate in the 4th TOMODACHI MUFG International Exchange Program, a two-week people-topeople exchange and cultural learning program in early summer 2015. The exchange program offers a homestay experience with a Japanese family, visits to cities affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and educational and cultural visits to the cities of Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Kyoto. High school students between the ages of 15 to 18 at the time of departure and residing in the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, San Bernardino and Riverside are encouraged to apply for this program. The deadline for applications is Monday, March 30, 2015 at 11:59pm. Applications and additional information available online at the JASSC website, www. jas-socal.org/Tomodachi-MUFG. • Obituaries Mark Smoke Larson, 1920 – 2015 Mark Smoke Larson, a 1938 graduate of Inglewood High School, died in Sedona, Arizona after a short illness. An electronics technician for NASA, he designed and built radios used in the Apollo space program. An accomplished double bass player as well, he contributed to the jazz scene in Virginia and Texas until the demands of the Space Race required all of his attention to work. January 9, 2015 was a sad day for us, but we can feel good about, the honorable life Mark lived. He was a good and talented man. He lived through history-making times of manned spaceflight and the Apollo Moon Missions. He was a part of making that history. His own electronic hardware contributions at NASA-Houston were flown on many Apollo launches. He was a master carpenter as well, building three houses during the course of his life, houses that, like his NASA radios, were built way beyond spec. What more is there to say about one of us when we are departing? Just this: Devoted Husband, Dad, Grandfather, Great grandfather, Brother, Uncle. Master Electrician, Mechanic, House-builder, Traveler, automobile fixer and driver extraordinare, Landscaper, Best friend to all Dogs, Mr. fix-it. Gone, greatly missed, but never forgotten.
