and imagination. If you plan on creating a

Sara’s Thoughts
Respect the Grind
When I was about 14 years old, I started
writing music. It had been a dream of mine
to be a professional singer, so you can understand
my excitement when I got a guitar as
a Christmas gift from my parents that same
year. I started writing short songs as soon as
I could—I didn’t care if I only knew two or
three chords. They were about my everyday
life. I wrote a couple of songs about growing
up, my friends, and even a song when I
lost my dog. It was an emotional and artistic
outlet that I greatly connected with. I enjoyed
“grinding out” a song, which included finding
rhymes, getting stuck, and then finally
finishing it. I never thought anyone would
hear them. I was happy to sing melodies of
my own creation.
Fast forward ten years to my current
age of 24. I have reached the end of this
decade and realized that my songwriting is
nowhere near as exciting to me. After years
of hearing about “vision casting” and “goal
setting,” I get more excited about the idea
of writing music for crowds of people
to hear than the actual process of writing.
I want the confetti and recognition, but I’m
no longer as passionate about the means to
that end. I’ve lost my first love of the craft.
As an artist, this road leads to burnout faster
than you can imagine. But when you believe
something is your calling, you don’t give
up that easily.
It will take a lot of discipline to undo the
years of damage that society (and its obsession
with performance) has done on my
creative spirit; but this upcoming year I will
take personal responsibility for my artistic
rehabilitation. I’m not very inspired by New
Year’s resolutions, but I am inspired by the
childlike wonder that is in all of us. This
upcoming year, my “goal” is to get it back.
Here’s to enjoying the grind once again in
2020! Who’s with me? •
