El Tarasco – Really Good Food
and a Love Story
By Ramona Bell
Anyone who knows El Segundo knows
there is no shortage of restaurants and eateries.
Even though, it’s always fun to try out a
new place, it’s also nice to stick with the tried
and true favorite.
One of my favorites is El Tarasco on Main
Street and the history behind its humble beginnings
makes it even better. Celia and Moises
Palomo eloped back in the early 1960s in their
native country, Mexico. Putting together years
of hard work, they managed to purchase their
very first piece of real estate in Manhattan
Beach and opened a teeny-tiny restaurant they
named El Tarasco. This marked the beginning
of a life-long business venture and lucky for
us, 8 years later they opened their second
restaurant, “our” El Tarasco in El Segundo.
I remember El Tarasco from the early 1970s,
when I was still in high school. Not much
more than a hallway with a small kitchen in
the back, hand-written menu items and daily
specials on notebook paper were taped to the
walls. But the food was authentic, the portions
generous, the prices affordable and my favorite
burrito – delicious! And all of that still is.
It’s bigger and brighter now, colorfully painted
tables and chairs and the familiar accents of
Mexican folkloric décor catches your eyes as
soon as you walk in.
Whether you are on a quick lunch alone or
filing in the family for dinner, you’ll be served
the hand-made chips and salsa. Perhaps by the
ever-smiling Gustavo, who has worked there
for 30 years.
The large menu offers enchiladas, fajitas, tacos,
their signature burrito and a whole lot more.
Beer, wine and, of course, Margaritas with
a happy hour, kid’s menus, catering, breakfast
all day, the list of services is impressive.
So, the brave and industrious newlyweds who
once harvested avocados as migrant workers, came
to produce 5 children, 11 restaurants and an
avocado ranch which supplies all of the restaurants.
Celia and Moises realized the true
American dream and now their family carries it
on. If you haven’t been to El Tarasco lately, or
even before, it’s a good time to treat yourself. •
“If you have good food, people
will come to your restaurant.”

God is Good, God is Bad
When something really good happens,
we hear people say, “God is
good!”. I guess when something bad
happens then this implies that God is bad
then. Not everything we think is good for
us is really that good for us. God gives us
what we need. If we have faith in his divine
power and his love, then we can say that,
“all things work for good, for those who
love God”. At this time of the year, we
think of the good cheer and the good cold
ones we have had or will have this coming
year. We think of all the “Christmas spirit”
things that bring us closer together. But not
all things are “cheery and bright”. In God’s
infinite wisdom, He knows what is best for
us. While we live here in this sinful world
things will not always be the way we want
them to be. God wants us to depend on him.
It’s not our way all the time, it’s not easy
street every day, it’s not smiles and laughter
with our families, it is God’s will that we
pray to accept. The Christmas season and
2020 will bring things into our lives that we
don’t particularly like or jump for joy over.
But, come what may, God will be there for
us to guide and guard us. Yes, God is good
when good things happen and he is also good
even when bad things happen in our lives.
We can be rest assured that He is in charge.
Isn’t that fantastic? What a relief! Whatever
the future brings, why in the heck
should we worry? Relax and enjoy
a cold one, God loves you and even
an old geezer like me!
A Christmas Letter to
My Loyal Readers
I thought I would save 11 postage
stamps and send my Christmas letter to you
using this forum since you are my true, blue,
loyal 11 readers who have weathered the
storm, who have nothing else better to do in
life, who overlook my shortcomings, who see
the real me and still read every iota, every
dot, every meandering sentence that goes on
and on and on in this cesspool of cold ones
and stupid innuendos. Wow! What in the
heck is an innuendo? Anyway, here we go:
Christmas Greetings from me and my ol’ lady!
From our empty nest to your abode, Merry
Christmas. I hope this past year has been a
year full of celebrations complete with cold
ones. Did you know that there are Advent
Beer calendars boxes where you get to partake
of a different cold one all 24 days leading
up Christmas day? That’s better than just
the 12 short days of Christmas. I’ve always
wondered why my true love never gave me
five cold ones on the fifth day instead of five
golden rings. To you and yours, have a very
merry, jolly, magical, super duper Christmas
and a very prosperous and healthy 2020. Life
is too short not to relax, have fun, act stupid
and enjoy it. Merry Christmas!
