TED Talk Discussion at
Wiseburn Public Library
Every month, the Wiseburn Library hosts
a showing of educational TED Talk videos
followed by a group discussion. This
month’s theme is music. The first talk is by
instrumentalist Pamelia Kurstin, where she
brings back the Theremin—a seemingly outdated
instrument from the beginning of the
electronic music era. The other talks are by
violinist Ji-Hae Park and music expert Anika
Paulson. You can join the Wiseburn Library
for this event on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 6 p.m.
For more information, call (310) 643-8880.
Dulce’s Thoughts:
Don’t forget to Donate
for the Holidays!
With the quick approach of the upcoming
holidays, more stores around Hawthorne are
filled with shoppers coming to buy gifts for
their families. Despite all the chaos that may
be going on around the city, please consider
donating to those in need this holiday season.
In Los Angeles County alone, over 65,000
children under the age of 18 are currently
homeless. These children are not at fault for
their current status, but you can help by donating
to charitable organizations that support
them. Share with others. Be compassionate this
holiday season. Charities such as the Salvation
Army and Goodwill are always open to
the public — a donation of a jacket or other
warm clothing can always help. Many other
businesses have boxes where you can donate
goods to children and parents. Currently, Target,
Disney Stores and even your local Starbucks
are carrying toy donation boxes for children
in need. The smiles that will fill up their faces
are the best gifts their parents can ask for. A
small donation can always instill the motion
for others to follow. Committing a good deed
always makes you feel a little happier…so
don’t be afraid to spread the joy! •

It Won’t Be The Same
Christmas starts way too soon.
I’m tired of all that Santa Clausy
music already. I know, I’m in
the Christmas business and we’ve been
preparing to sell nativities all year long, but
five or six weeks of shopping, commercials,
and television specials and movies
and decorating and eating and more eating
just gets to be too long. This month is
the season of Advent in a lot of churches.
It’s a time of preparing to celebrate the
birth of our Savior. It should be a time of
reflecting on what God has done for us
by sending his Son into this world. This
Christmas season will be the first for our
family without my dear mother in law,
Lena, who passed away on 9-11. Death
is such a life changing event, especially
for the person who dies. Death changes
everything for us who are still kickin’ here
on earth. For all of her 90 living years,
Lena was part of a family. We could talk
with her, we could stop by her home and she
would always offer us some food. Now, she
is no longer here. That is why Christmas is
difficult for so many. They feel separated.
They feel alone. Jesus comes for these
times. He comes to give comfort for those
who mourn. He comes to bring joy to those
who know no happiness. It won’t be the
same without Lena, we can’t see or hear
or feel her now, but knowing that we are
one in Christ, we can rejoice knowing that
Jesus comes to save us and grant us life
here on earth and for eternity. Lena and I
got along, I guess, mainly because my old
lady was stupid enough to marry me 40 years
ago this month. Let’s just say that Lena
tolerated me, except for all the times when
I told people to have a cold one. She
told me to stop writing all of that
stupid nonsense. Now, I suspect
that all eleven of my loyal readers
“tolerate” my nonsensical nonsense.
Why don’t we have a cold one in
her memory? She is up there living
the good life now. She probably don’t
miss me, I miss her.
Anti Whatever
You can read into things a lot. You can
read between the lines. You can suspect
that things are stacked against you. I just
don’t want to believe that there is a war going
on in our nation, a war for our minds and
our children’s minds. It sure appears that
there is an agenda to make us all not only
“tolerate” but endorse the beliefs and values
of small sectors of our population. If we do
not fully support those who advocate for
gender choice or stopping climate change
or economic equity then we are the bad
guys. We are red neck, white, old geezers
who were in charge last generation but
now need to move out of the way and accept
everything and anything. Just this week, I
learned that Amazon limits my company
from advertising because we sell religious
items. Canadian customs might retain my
nativities at the border because the box
has a cross on it. Being patriotic or religious
is not acceptable any more. Wear a certain
hat in the wrong crowd, you may just get
attacked. Protecting our religious and
civil rights is so important. We should always
have the right to believe, worship, sing
American songs, stand up and salute the flag
and speak freely of the God who loves us
dearly. I pray that our kids and grandkids
will learn and know what is true and right.
Don’t tell me I can’t conclude by saying,
“God Bless America”.
