Dulce’s Thoughts!
Why Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead)
is so important to many people in Hawthorne
Dia de Los Muertos is one of the most celebrated
and known holidays that takes place
during Hispanic Heritage Month. The celebration
takes place over two days, Nov. 1 (All
Saints Day) and Nov. 2 (All Souls Day). As
a child, other than the holiday taking place
during my birthday, I vividly remember the
colored “papeles picados” (pecked paper) and
pictures of relatives on a mantel. However, at
the time, I didn’t understand how much those
days were valued by my family as a significant
part of our culture and traditions. Dia de Los
Muertos is said to be a ritual that was founded

Broken People
We are all broken in one way or
another. We all have our weaknesses.
Some of us suffer from physical illnesses.
Some of us have mental challenges.
We all know of people in our circles that are
sick, or are going through family trauma, or
are lonely, or are so stressed out that they
don’t want to even face another day. Some
of us may have difficulty getting a good night
sleep. It’s amazing that our little world just
keeps on humming along when so many people
are not healthy or are just barely hanging on.
Even if we do feel healthy and we don’t seem
to have that many major problems facing us,
we all are getting older. We all will have to
face death eventually. How do we handle all
of this bad stuff? Why can’t we all just get
along, live peacefully and stay health forever?
No matter how hard we try on our own, we
can’t avoid this mess. When we realize that
we are not strong enough, smart enough, or
macho enough to deal with what life throws
at us, we have to look for help outside of
ourselves. Some of us turn to drugs, some of
us read all we can about living a long, healthy
life. Some of us just drink our cold ones and
forget about the future and our problems. Yes,
a cold one can help us temporarily, but it not
the total fix. Take it for what it’s worth, in the
midst of our weakness, God comes to us and
says trust in me. This great and powerful God
who created the heavens and the earth, cares
about me and you and every individual
human being. He loves us. Because
sin came into the world, we live in a
world full of sin, and ultimately the
wages of sin is death. But, God has
provided us with a solution, he has sent
his son, Jesus, to take on our sin and
redeem us and freely gives us salvation,
eternal life. Some of you are going, right?
That’s too simple. I can’t believe that God
loves me that much. I’ve been a bad person.
I’m not good enough. All this God and bible
stuff is for others. It’s not for me. Well, do
you have a better plan? Are you still thinking
you can win and beat the odds and avoid
death? It’s not about being good enough or
being nice enough or being religious or going
to church enough, it’s about allowing God to
love you and you trusting in his redeeming
grace. I am broken. I’m a poor, lousy, no
good for nothing, drunken, stupid, want-to-be
writer, but I’m loved and forgiven and saved
by the creator of the universe. That is the
reason I can relax, have fun, and enjoy a cold
one. When life gets to be too much, stop and
remember who created you and who loves you.
Rejoice, relax, and celebrate! Please join with
me, I hate to be the only one having all the
fun. Let the party never end. Good things
never have to end.
Why?
Random questions that pop into my head
for these wild times we live in? If Trump is
impeached and thrown out of office, would
the Democrats really like Mike Pence better?
