Sociedad Jose Marti 50th Anniversary Celebration
Sociedad Jose Marti in Hawthorne celebrated its 50th anniversary over the weekend. Their annual Cuban Festival was held from noon until 7 p.m. with entertainment for the whole family, raffle prizes, jumpers for kids, dancing, fun, delicious Cuban food – sandwiches,
tamales, pastries, Cuban coffee – and of course, lot of music. Several vendors also sold apparel-t-shirts, hats, jewelry, and more. DJ AudioGenics manned the ones and twos spinning an eclectic mix of the hottest Latin rhythms in rotation. La Charanga Cubana returned to
play several energetic sets for the several hundred people in attendance. Photo and Text by Ricky Richardson
Hawthorne Happenings
News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
Not HH, A Different HH
No more Hawthorne Happenings
for me. I’m honoring my late, great
mother-in-law by throwing in the towel
and quitting the weekly grind of trying to write
about my former city while living 400 miles
away. Now, I’m FREE! Yes, I’m FREE to
write about anything and everything. When I
announced that I was considering stepping down
from my HH column, I was underwhelmed by
the outpouring of support from a total of two
loyal readers and the owner of the newspaper
telling me not to stop writing. On the flip
side, of course, was my extended family that
was celebrating the fact that they no longer
had to torture themselves with my weekly
musings. These critical family members are
now recommending that I seek out therapy for
an extreme case of attention deficit disorder.
They think that I “need the attention” that I
crave by continuing to peck away on my Apple
mini computer. As for you, my 10 loyal
readers, you no longer have to read through
announcements about historical society meetings
or toxic roundups. If you want to read about
cold ones and Jesus, just look for this other
HH. (“Hiccups and Hind Sights” is the best
name that I could come up with this week.
Maybe next week I will try BB, “Brews and
Beliefs”.) No one can accuse me of conflict
of interest by writing about God and beer. I
have lost all of the strings that tied me to my
past life of being a Hawthorne resident and
former city clerk. My brother-in-law thinks I
have a lost a lot more than strings over the
years. I don’t really care, you critics are not
going to stop me from having a hell of a time
enjoying my life.
Core Values – Spiritual
Truths – Life’s Foundation
Since I’m starting a new column today, it
might be a good time to share with you where
I’m coming from. I talk about my OL a lot.
My OL is Linda, my ol’ lady. After
40 years I think she still loves me even
with all of my dumbness. Any way,
here is what I base my writings and
life on: God chose me to be his child
before the world was ever created. God
chose me out of sheer love, not because
of anything I have done or will do. He
chose me. I didn’t choose Him. Through his
Word, God is using me to share his love with
all 13 of you who read this stuff. Because I
know who I am and how God loves me unconditionally,
I am free to write and act stupid.
I am free to have a cold one to celebrate this
joy and peace that I so undeservedly possess
because God has chosen me. So, what’s the
point? My desire is for you too to take hold
of that same joy and peace that I have. Do
I mess up? Yes. Do I get mad? Yes. Do I
worry? You bet! But, I know that through it
all, God forgives me and loves me like a loving
Father. I base all of my views, opinions,
insights, comments, values on this relationship
that I have with Jesus. God desires that you
be one of his children also. Find a Bible, read
John chapter 3, find a Christian church to attend.
You will be amazed by what God has to
give to you. Oh yes, don’t forget to have a
cold one, relax and enjoy life.
Okay, What is the
Big Announcement?
I promised that I would have a big announcement
a month ago and I left all 8 of you loyal
readers hanging. The suspense is killing me.
Don’t be too disappointed, but I wanted to
offer you, my friends, a way of reading more
of my rambling stuff. So, I will be launching
my own website with postings of blogs and
blurbs that will be hidden on the cloud and
lost in cyber space. I’ve been working on
the format of the site on and off for over two
months and it is still not quite ready. I will
let you know when it’s up and running. Until
the site is launched, you will have to survive
or chew on or submit yourself to this weekly
dribble. I would love to hear any comments:
