Going Back
Striving Forward
Like so many American who
have been in lockdown mode the
past few months, my dear wife,
Linda, wanted to get out of the
house and take a short vacation
before the grandkids started back to their
virtual, online schooling experience this week.
So, we took a spur of the moment trip over
to the North Coast this past weekend. We
rode the Skunk Train in Fort Bragg and then
traveled up the coast to Humboldt and Del
Norte Counties ending up in my old hometown
of Crescent City. I spent 10 of my formative
years right there in the middle of the
redwoods and on the beautiful rocky shores
of the Pacific Ocean. This weekend, I had
the opportunity to show my grandkids my
old, stomping grounds. The high temperature
was all of 65 degrees, which is typical for
CCC, Crescent City California. It is right
on the coast and has more foggy, damp and
overcast days than not. The redwood groves
are incredible. These 300-foot tall trees
with 40-foot diameter bases are amazing to
walk amongst. It makes you think really
how small we are as humans compared to
the greatness of God’s creation. We drove
around the small town to see my old house
and the church where my father was the
pastor at. I took the family past my schools
and the beaches that we would ride our bikes
down to. It really wasn’t that sentimental
or emotional. I had been back once before
many years ago. It has been 50 some years
since I called Crescent City my hometown.
We can’t turn back time even if those days
were happy ones. We can’t go back and
relive our pasts. Even if we could, most of
us would not like to repeat our past. Would
I do things differently? Would I
change things now that I can look
back on them? Sure, I made
some wrong choices. I think
I worried way too much about
things that really didn’t matter.
We all live worrying about how
others feel about us. The past is
the past. God gives us memories
to remember what is important.
He gives us minds to cherish our
family times. He teaches us lessons so
that we may learn from our mistakes and
not repeat them. We are who we are. We
can’t live in the past. We can’t change our
past. We live now and we live looking
forward. Every new day gives us another
opportunity to live life to its fullest. What
the heck, why not have a cold one? Why
not love our families, neighbors and friends?
Why not spend some of that stimulus money
and enjoy life? Why not tell your old lady
or old man that you love them? Why not
do something stupid and laugh at yourself?
Why not just forget about all this virus, social
justice, political fighting, looting, rioting,
protesting, social distancing, mask wearing
regulations and worry less, love more, drink
more and relax. If you are reading this junk,
you are alive. Why live sad or miserable?
Life is too short to die sad or mad. Thank
you loyal readers for allowing me to share
my story with all 32 of you. I am just one
life, one story to share. All of you have
stories to tell. All of us are unique. We all
have lives that have been amazing. We read
in Philippians 3:13-14 “Brothers, I do not
consider that I have made it my own. But
one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind
and straining forward to what lies ahead, I
press on toward the goal for the prize of the
upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Press
on folks, press on with joy, have a cold one,
relax and don’t look back.
