Close Calls
and Your Time
I experienced one of those scary
moments last Saturday. I was playing
in our men’s club golf event
and hit a nice drive but slightly
into the trees on the 16th hole.
My playing partners and I were looking for
my golf ball when we heard a loud “fore”
coming from the tee on the previous hole.
Instinctively I threw my hands up to cover
my head and it’s a good thing I did because
within a second a screaming yellow golf ball
hit my hands and glanced off bouncing and
rolling another 20 yards. Except for a bruise
on my middle finger, I came out unharmed
physically, but a little frayed emotionally. The
man who hit the wayward drive came rushing
over in his golf cart to apologize and to see
if I was okay. I thanked him for yelling and
told him I knew of a good lawyer and that
he should expect papers to be served within
the coming week. Only joking, it’s not like I
have never misdirected a drive. He did offer
to buy me a cold one in the club house after
the round, but being the weakling that I am
having consumed one already, I declined his
offer. Immediately after being hit in the hand,
I started thinking, what if? What if I had not
thrown up my hands? What if the screaming
ball would have hit the back of my head? What
if I was knocked crazier than I am already?
What if I couldn’t write this junk any longer?
What if my time had come? We all have at
one time or another in our lives experienced
a “near death” moment. What if? Most of
us would say that we were lucky. Luck was
on my side last Saturday. Being a
believer, someone of faith, I believe
that God did not want to call me
home at age 66. One of those dumb
golf jokes involves a golfer who
is told that the good news is that
there will be golf in heaven, the bad
news is that he has a tee time up at
a heavenly course the next morning
at 7 a.m. No one knows when his
or her time will be up. I believe
that God isn’t done using me down here yet.
He just might want me around for a few more
years so that I can continue to spew out my
swirling, summation of smoldering smoke
signals of all sorts of bull crap, (I can’t use
that other “s” word in a family-friendly blog
post that promotes beer drinking and is pro-
God, pro-life, pro-USA, pro-family, pro-gun,
and pro-conservative politically.) Whenever
your life passes quickly in front of you, we
start thinking about how we all are going to
die. It doesn’t matter how old we are, how
old we look, how old we feel. Someone asked
me recently how I was married to a lady that
looks 30 years younger than me. I told him
that that younger looking lady was my daughter.
He believed me. So, either my ol’ lady
looks really young or I look rather old. Loyal
readers, friends, neighbors, and/or all of you
folk who read this junk, live life knowing full
well that some day our time will be up. Value
each day. Why worry? None of this stuff is
going to matter when we are six feet under or
sitting on a shelf. Have a cold one, relax and
trust that God is not done with you quite yet.
Just remember when someone yells “fore”, be
quick to duck, cover and roll!
