Dispatchers are the True Unsung Heroes
Breakfast, gifts and huggies for our dispatch family, from K9 Scottie and Thyme during National Public Safety Telecommunications Week. Our Public Safety Dispatchers are the first line of contact for many Hawthorne residents and help create the positive reputation
and image the Department enjoys. We would like to honor the men and women who perform telecommunications duties and serve as an essential link between our officers, the public and vital support services. Thank you to all Public Safety Dispatchers. Photo courtesy

Guilty or Not Guilty
With a nation watching the guilty
verdict being pronounced today, I
started to think about what being
found guilty really means. In our
justice system, there is no middle
ground. You either are guilty of the
crime you have been charged with or you
are acquitted and set free. There is never a
half-guilty, half innocent verdict. We all tend
to be a judge in a jury trial. We all have our
opinions. We play judge all the time. We
judge others. We judge ourselves. We judge
our spouses especially when we feel they
have said or done something to violate our
egos or our selfish ways. We certainly can
be a lot more lenient when we look at our
own actions as opposed to those we live with.
We tell ourselves, “I’m not so bad. I know
what’s best. I just wish others would be as
nice as me.” Our pride gets in our way. We
think our way is the right way always. We
get prideful; we think we can do no wrong.
We can justify almost all of our actions. If
the truth be told, we all are guilty beyond
a shadow of uncertainty. We are guilty of
pride, self-interest, lust, envy, slander, hatred,
and a myriad of other thoughts and deeds.
When we turn our minds to how
we are doing in God’s eyes, we
rationalize that “we ain’t as bad
as those bad guys we see on the
10 o’clock news”. In God’s justice
system, we are all guilty, guilty
and more guilty. We are doomed.
There is no doubt, no shadow,
no gray area. We are as done and
headed to prison forever. And the
fact is, we deserve it. But wait,
just at the right moment, some guy takes
our place, he takes our punishment, he takes
our guilty verdict and we are set free. Better
yet, our rap sheet is wiped clean. We are as
squeaky clean as Mr. Clean can make us. God
looks down and sees us as forgiven sons and
daughters because of what Jesus did on
Good Friday and Easter. When we admit our
guilt, we are forgiven. We are set free to live
the rest of our earthly lives like ex-cons let
out of Folsom Prison. God’s justice system
sure is different than our justice system.
God turns everything upside down. Because
of one man, Jesus, people are given their
freedom. Wow! If we have just been let out
recently, or we have been out of the pokey
for many years, it’s always a good time to
celebrate. Now, today, tomorrow, every day
is a great time to have a cold one, relax
and resolve to live a life of thankfulness to
