December 8, 2016 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings News for the City of Good Neighbors from City Clerk Huber HOLIDAY HOME DECORATING CONTEST If you have spent some time decorating your home this holiday season then here is your chance to show it off to the community. The Recreation and Community Services Department of the City of Hawthorne is sponsoring a Holiday Home Decorating Contest. The contest is free and open to all Hawthorne residents. Awards will be given to the first, second and third place winners. The deadline for entry is Tuesday, December 13th. Entry forms can be picked up at the Recreation Department’s office at the Memorial Center or you can download a copy off of the City’s website. For more information please call 310-349-1640. CHRISTMAS OPEN HOUSE Mayor Pro Temp Angie English and the City of Hawthorne invite you to a Christmas Open House event to be held on Thursday, December 22 at the Memorial Center. More details will be included in next week’s column. Just mark your calendars for this special holiday happening taking place for the first time this year. SOCIAL MEDIA AND SMART PHONES I run an ecommerce business. We sell things on the internet. We have been doing this for the past eight years. Things change very quickly in the world of social media and marketing. In the past we would hope to get a high ranking for our website on Google search engines. We started to pay for advertisements that would put us at the top of a search page and then we would be charged by the number of clicks we received during a certain day. Now, one of the best ways to sell a product is to purchase Facebook advertisements. Friends share a post with their friends. Customers make their purchase from their cell phone. Who needs to go to the mall and fight the crowds? You can order on Amazon’s Prime and you will have the item in two days or less. The US Postal Service now delivers Amazon orders on Sundays. How things have changed. HOLIDAY MUSIC Yes, KOST 103.5 has been playing wall to wall Christmas music for the past month already. Yes, by listening to it you do feel like the Christmas season has arrived. But, I just can’t take too much of that ho, ho, ho stuff. It gets old after 30 minutes or less. I love music of all sorts. It can be uplifting. I love to listen to music rather than the talk shows, the news, or commercials during my 30 minute commute to and back from LB (Long Beach). I love Christmas and I do love music, but it has to be just the right kind of Christmas music. Here is my take on some of my favorite Christmas songs: Silent Night (Something unheard of in Hawthorne). I’m dreaming of a White Christmas (It did snow in Hawthorne for five minutes 65 years ago, so there is a chance.) Blue Christmas (Here’s hoping that our guys and gals in Blue have a safe Christmas season. Our Hawthorne Police need our prayers for protection.) Joy to the World (Real joy comes from knowing the reason for the season.)
