Butts and the Inglewood City Council approved a purchase agreement with African American Male Achievers Network, Inc. (A-MAN, Inc.) for the sale by the City of property located at 101-105 S. La Brea Avenue. According to the staff report, the founders of A-MAN reached out to Inglewood City Manager Artie Fields in October to inform the City that their building was on the market. The information prompted Fields to discuss with the Council the possibility of the City purchasing the property. After the conclusion of the initial closed session discussion, Fields received direction to contact a licensed appraiser for an official appraisal. “The appraisal justified the City’s offer of purchasing the A-MAN building for $4.1 million,” states the staff report signed by Fields. “The A-MAN site is located adjacent to the Civic Center and the purchase of the property is critical in that it allows the City to control the site for future government or private development. At this time, there are no immediate needs for the building.” A-MAN, Inc. was founded in 1991 and has since provided educational enrichment programs to kids ages 5-18. This non-profit’s enrichment programs have been developed to provide youths of all genders, ethnic and racial backgrounds with education, mentoring and career opportunities. By using Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) activities, A-MAN aims to advance the educational and career success of at-risk students in technical fields. In addition, A-MAN, Inc. provides specific STEM in-service training for teachers in order to ensure that children are receiving quality programs. Through the first two goals, it is expected that there be an increase in post-secondary options of “underachieving, underrepresented youth, ensuring that they are academically and cognitively prepared for college, successfully.” Operations for A-MAN, Inc. are based in the International Science Discovery & Learning Center at 101 S. La Brea Avenue in a 7,500-square-foot facility that is open after school, year round. The facility is equipped with lasers, a space station research laboratory, robotic equipment, a reading lab, math lab and computer lab. “The founders of A-MAN, Inc., Hildreth [Hal] Walker, Jr. and Dr. Bettye Davis Walker, serve respectively as Chairman and President of the organization. Hildreth’s scientific work includes having worked on the lunar laser ranging experiment, with famed astronaut Buzz Aldrin, measuring the distance from the earth to the moon with a laser bean,” concludes the staff report. Council Approves City Sponsorship of District 2 Christmas Toy Drive Members of the Council and Mayor Butts agreed for the City to sponsor the 4th Annual District 2 Christmas Toy Drive to take place on Saturday, December 10 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the District No. 2 Community Center located at 1201 N. La Tijera Boulevard. Proposed by District No. 2 Councilman Alex Padilla, the annual drive reaches out to a wide range of individuals, local organizations and businesses asking for unwrapped toy donations that will then be distributed to families with kids who have been referred by the community. Padilla’s request for toy donations has received wide support and the efforts to helping less fortunate Inglewood families during the Christmas season has also grown. “For years, individuals as well as organizations have come together to provide supplemental support to families with children who have had to forego during the holiday season,” states Padilla’s request. “This year, I will again have the privilege of partnering with an Inglewood non-profit organization to provide gifts for children who might otherwise go without present this Christmas.” MOU Approved Between City of Inglewood, LA-RICS A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the City of Inglewood and the Los Angeles Regional Interoperable Com - munications System (LA-RICS) Authority received approval so the Police Department can borrow 17 portable radios at no cost. LA-RICS provides day-to-day communications between agency personnel to allow for interagency communications in order to respond to routine, emergency and critical situations. This modern system of integrated wireless voice and data communication is specifically designed to aid first responders throughout Los Angeles County. However, to use such a system it is necessary that the local agency purchase new equipment and upgrade its infrastructure, such as new in-car mobile and portable radios. The Inglewood Police Department will require 360 radios at an estimated cost of $2.8 million. In an effort to reduce cost, LA-RICS has agreed to loan radio units to agencies, including Inglewood PD, that have agreed to join the regional communications system. The system is scheduled to go live by June of 2018. While the loans are free, the department is liable for damaged or lost radios. • “The A-MAN site is located adjacent to the Civic Center and the purchase of the property is critical in that it allows the City to control the site for future government or private development.” Inside This Issue Certified & Licensed Professionals.......................2 Classifieds............................3 Community Briefs...............2 Finance..................................4 Hawthorne Happenings....3 Legals................................ 6-7 Looking Up...........................5 Pets........................................8 Police Reports.....................3 Sports....................................5 Seniors..................................4 Weekend Forecast Friday Cloudy 63˚/57 Saturday Mostly Sunny 64˚/56˚ Sunday Mostly Sunny 65˚/54˚
