Hawthorne Happenings
News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
How Long, How Much?
Most of you loyal readers know that
I am the owner/operator of Outdoor
Nativity Store. We sell outdoor nativity
scenes on the internet and literally send Mary,
Joseph, Jesus, angels, the 3 wise guys, a shepherd,
sheep, camels and asses (donkeys) around
the world. This selling season has continued to
show that Amazon dominates the ecommerce
market. Sixty to seventy percent of our sales
takes place on the Amazon marketplace. As
much as I am benefiting from sales related to
the Christmas holiday, I ask the question, how
long should Christmas be? Do the Christmas
songs on the radio and in the stores get old after
a month or more? Does the jolly times really
have to last that long? I’m all for having that
warm and fussy feeling of giving and being
cheery towards others, but with Christmas store
sales beginning in October, the season seems
to lose some of it’s instantaneous. Would Jesus
approve of all this hustle and bustle? It’s his
birthday that started all of this. Yes, he wants
us to be happy. He wants us to be giving and
generous to help those of less fortune. But, He
really doesn’t want us to miss the real meaning
of why his birth is celebrated. He came
to save each and everyone of us. His life,
death and resurrection is the gift that means
everything. We have eternal life because of
him. We can be happy all year long, we can
be happy all life long because we know the
ending of the story. Because Jesus lives, we
live also. No matter what life throws our way,
we are victorious and it all started that star
filled night in a lowly stable in the small town
called Bethlehem. Go ahead and enjoy the
season, the music, the movies, the shopping,
the church services, the school programs, the
decorating, the cookie baking and the family
gatherings, but don’t miss the point the of it
all. A Savior came to save us and give us
life, everlasting life. So, be happy and jolly
all month or two months long.
New City Council Members and
City Clerk to be Sworn In
Alex Monteiro and Olivia Valentine will be
sworn in as City Council members on Tuesday,
December 11 at 6 p.m. in the City Council chambers.
Dr. Paul Jimenez and David Patterson will
take their oaths to perform their duties as City
Clerk and City Treasurer at that same meeting.
Winter Wonderland
Make plans to attend one of the most fun
events in Hawthorne all year. The Parks and
Recreation and Community Services Department
of the City of Hawthorne started something really
good last year at Christmas time. The
Winter Wonderland had snow, games,
gifts, food, fun and a real Santa and
Ms. Claus. The turnout for the event
was more than expected. This year it
most likely will be even bigger. The
Winter carnival will be held over at the
Memorial Center on December 19th.
Mark your calendars now for this super event.
Kiwanis Club
Seniors Luncheon
The Kiwanis Club of Hawthorne will host their
annual Seniors luncheon for all of us older folks
on Friday, December 7th, Pearl Harbor Day.
101 years old thanks to a
Cold One a Day
The question is always asked of anyone who
turns 100, what do you attribute your longevity
to? Forget green juices and turmeric smoothies
— one man credits his longevity to a different
kind of beverage. Andrew E. Slavonic, who
celebrated his 101st birthday on Dec. 1 with
his family and friends in McMurray, Penn.,
has been drinking one Coors Light every day
at 4 p.m. for the past 15 years. There you go,
this is proof of what I have been saying every
week for the past nine years, have a cold one
and enjoy life! Did you see that Costco has a
German Beer Advent Calendar Box? You can
have 24 different cold ones during the month
leading up to Christmas, one unique cold one
instead of a lousy chocolate candy.
Hardest Job in the World
Forget being a teacher or a politician as being
tough, a friend of mine up here in NorCal
talked me in to signing up to be a basketball
referee this season. I like to try new things. I
always look at something new as a challenge.
How good can I be? or can I really do this
without messing up? I thought it would be
a good way to stay in shape and get paid to
exercise. Let me tell you, a referee is never
right all the time. No matter how good you
are, some player, coach, parent or fan is not
going to like the call that you make. Blowing
a whistle has to be an instanteous action
based on the judgment of what you thought
you saw. Every fan, no matter what the sport
is, should try officiating a game some time.
They may think twice about yelling at a ref or
an umpire and telling them that they missed
a certain call. There is no way a robot could
do what refs do. The ability to see, hear, and
judge what is going on out on the court is
simply a human ability. I’m experienced at
refereeing contests, I was City Clerk for nine
years and tried my best to keep the five main
players in line. I needed a whistle back then.
Life is great, try something new. How about
a new beer?
