of bleak resigned passivity.
The characters are relayed perfectly relatable
and fully-fleshed, which makes our emotional
investment in them all the more effortless.
Adam is especially expanded upon and
develops into a prototypical protagonist that
provides the reader with profuse amounts of
empathy and emotional fodder. His personal
journey of inspiration, infatuation and eventual
maturation is masterful from a writerly
perspective. Carefully handled and unrushed,
the story portrays a solid hero by all accounts
and expectations.
This is a book that paints a vivid picture of
a brave new world potentially lurking in wait
tomorrow. It’s a world in which convenience
reigns supreme and human connections are
interfaced by the light of a blue, unblinking
screen. And hopefully we can derive lessons
from this apocalyptic, social media-strangled
existence and learn to better define ourselves
with compassion and comity again. •
