Page 4 November 3, 2016 El Segundo Offense Too Much for Hawthorne By Eric Ramos Photos by Greg McMullin Hawthorne pulled off an incredible upset win over El Segundo last season, however, the Eagles’ defense forced four turnovers in a 35-7 dominating win last Friday at Halcap field. The Cougars fall to 3-6 on the season and 2-2 in Ocean League play. El Segundo (8-1, 3-1) is locked in a three-way tie for first place with Lawndale and Culver City. The Ocean League will be decided Friday when all teams play in the season finale. El Segundo took an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter when quarterback Kobee Lagarde hit Billy Brasher for a 21-yard touchdown. The Cougars responded with quarterback Marte Mapu’s 15-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Carlos Jacobo, tying the game, 7-7, with 9:00 left in the second quarter. The Eagles come right back with a 67-yard drive, capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass from Lagarde to Ashton Saltz. After backto back interceptions by Mapu, El Segundo capitalized on the turnovers with 26-yard touchdown run by running back Taz Tauaese, extending the lead, 21-7, with two minutes left in the second quarter. On the ensuing drive, Mapu is intercepted by the Eagles’ Taj Balogun, which set up Palmer’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Brasher, with just under a minute left in the first half. El Segundo took a 28-7 lead into halftime. On defense, the Eagles were able to shut out Hawthorne in the second half with tough defensive line play. Mapu was intercepted four times and sacked twice. Brasher hauled in an 8-yard touchdown pass from Jake Palmer for his third touchdown of the night and putting the game out of reach in the fourth quarter. Taurese finished with 102 yards on 15 carries while Brasher added five receptions for 101 yards. Jacobo finished with four receptions for 42 yards and a touchdown for the Cougars. Hawthorne will play its final game of the season Friday when they travel to Lawndale Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Lawndale vs. Beverly Hills Lawndale remains in a three-way tie for first place in the Ocean League with a 67-0 rout of Beverly Hills last Friday. The Cardinals (4-4, 2-1) will host Hawthorne Friday at 7 p.m. in the season finale. Leuzinger vs. West Torrance Leuzinger was led by its ground game as they rushed for 432 yards to help the Olympians defeat Torrance, 25-10, last Friday. Leuzinger remains undefeated in the Pioneer League as they head towards the season finale against Centennial Friday at 7 p.m. Leuzinger running back Daniel Carmicle rushed for 194 yards while adding touchdown runs of 88 and 65 yards. The Olympians (7-2, 4-0) led 18-10 at halftime and added a touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Inglewood vs. Redondo Union Inglewood was held to 117 yards of total offense in a 29-6 Bay League loss to Redondo Union last Friday. The Sentinals remain winless in league play and fall to 3-6 overall on the season. Inglewood will play rival Morningside in the season finale Friday at 7 p.m. • No. 34 Angelo Pacheco and No. 32 Mark Binder punish Hawthorne running back Justice Powers on a short gain. No. 71 Kaden Langlois and No. 52 Jess Caravello were a big reason why the Eagles rushed for 275 yards against Hawthorne.
