November 3, 2016 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings News for the City of Good Neighbors from City Clerk Huber Veterans’ Day Event The Hawthorne Veterans Commission is sponsoring their second annual Veterans’ Day Event on Friday, November 11th starting at 10:15 a.m. at the Memorial Center. Last year’s event was well attended. Plan to honor our vets with your attendance. For all of the freedoms that we take for granted, we owe so much to our men and women who have put their lives on the line to protect us and preserve this great country, the greatest country in the world, the USA. The End of the Tunnel It been a long haul. It’s been full of ups and downs, mostly downs. It’s thrown many curves at us along the way. It’s thrown us for a loop. It’s turned us off. We’re sick of it all. Now, we are faced with a dilemma. Do we vote or do we just stay home and have a cold one? Someone has to win. Someone has to be the leader of the free world. No matter what the outcome is next Tuesday, I hope and pray that our country can come together enough to fight the real battles facing us here and abroad. We all can agree that we want a safe place in which to live, work and raise our families. We all can agree that we want jobs right here in America so that our citizens can make a living and support their families. We all can agree that all people should be respected, young and old; and for me that respect begins at conception. We all can agree that all people, black, brown, white, or yellow, should be treated fairly. We have much we can agree upon, but it’s how we achieve these goals that bogs us down, that makes us burning mad, that divides us so much that we lose sight of the fact that we are all Americans and we want our country to win, prosper, grow and be truly the “United” States. Maybe we should just look at our currency and remember the motto written on it, “In God We Trust”. Maybe, just maybe, our differences would be diminished and we can work together. With the end of the dark tunnel in sight, we can get back to enjoying life, smelling the roses along the way and having a cold one once in awhile. Voting Places If you do decide to vote and you are uncertain where your precinct is, you can go online to: www.lavote.net/locator and type in your name, birthdate and address and it will tell you where to go to vote. If you have your sample ballot, your precinct should be printed on the back cover. I would recommend that you fill out your sample ballot before entering the ballot box, the California ballot is long this time. Time Change Changing our clocks is a hassle. Some blue tooth gadgets automatically adjust for the time change. Some clock radios are really easy. But, then comes the car clocks. Every automobile clock is slightly different. I can never remember from one year to the next how to adjust my Honda’s clock. Who wants to get the owners manual out to read two pages on which button to press and hold to reverse the electronic hour setting? It’s “fall back Sunday” this Sunday. We gain an hour of sleep this Saturday night. To tell you the truth, I would love to gain about ten hours of sleep instead of just one. Us “grumpy, old guys and gals” sometimes don’t get enough good sleep. Grumpy? Me? Yes, it must be my Germanic make up. I was born grumpy, now I’m just old and grumpy. Good thing God loves me even if I’m a big grump. Housing Shortage Hawthorne has a shortage of housing. Of course there are not a lot empty lots or open space on which to build more homes. It seems like as soon as we build more units they are filled. There are far more people who want to live here in Hawthorne than what our city can accommodate. Everything is relative to the cost of living anywhere in SoCal. House prices are rising, apartment rents are increasing. Affordable housing for many is just a dream. We have people sharing homes just to have a place to sleep. A friend of mine has lived in the same apartment in Moneta Gardens for over 30 years and is being displaced because a new owner wants to remodel and start over with new tenants. My friend has been looking for a suitable place to live the past four weeks and is having trouble locating anything in our area. For all the negatives that come with living so close together, there are still a lot of people who want to make Hawthorne their home • Contact email: norbhuber@gmail.com (If you do enjoy my weekly column, please shoot me an email.
