News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
Less is Better
We’ve been told so many times,
“work hard and success will follow”.
The good old American work ethic
was drilled into many of us. Somewhere in
Proverbs it says, “those who work should eat,
those who don’t, don’t”. I never thought I
was blessed with extraordinary athletic talent
but I had to work harder than others to
make the team or get some playing time.
As you know, I never thought I was that
smart or wise or intelligent or intellectual,
but God gave me some common sense and
I have simply put it to use. All of my life
I felt that I had to work to prove myself to
others or to myself. Suddenly, my life has
changed. Now, I’m learning not to worry
about doing things all the time. The best part
of retirement is not having to do anything.
But doing nothing is boring. There is a big
difference in slowing down to enjoy life and
being down right lazy. I have found plenty of
things to do out of choice. Right now, my
old lady’s, honey-do list doesn’t seem like
misery since I have the time to complete her
lengthy list of home and garden upgrades.
We read in Galatians 6:9, “Let us not grow
weary of doing good”. No matter what stage
of life we find ourselves in or where we live
or how healthy we are, there are still many
ways to “do good”. Our reward for doing
good is the satisfaction from knowing we
have helped another person or made life better
for our loved ones. Many of you 17 or so
readers would agree, the volunteer jobs we
do are much more rewarding than the jobs
we might get paid to do. Doing less and
doing things for others, is better. Having a
cold one after a long, hot day, even if you
have done less, still sounds pretty good.
Less cold ones is not good, less worry and
stress is good.
The Filing Period is now Open
Now is the time to go down to my old office,
the City Clerk’s office, and pull papers
to file to run for one of two City Council
seats, the City Clerk and the City Treasurer’s
positions that will be contested this fall.
The filing period will end on August
10th for all positions except for City
Clerk which will end on August 15th
at 5 p.m. So, get involved. Run for
a city office.
John Baker Memorial
Cruise Night
John Baker was Mr. Cougar. He
lived and loved the Hawthorne High School/
Beach Boys/Hot Rod life. His sudden death
dealt a blow to the Cougartown website and
to the very popular social media experience
that so many HHS alums enjoyed. Facebook
is somewhat helping to keep these former
Cougars together. But, there is nothing like
seeing each other face to face and that is
exactly what will happen at Foster’s Freeze
on Hawthorne Blvd. In memory of John
Baker, there will be a cruise night on Saturday,
July 21 from 5 to 9 p.m. Come out and get
reunited with your HHS friends. Cougartown
is alive and well.
Summer Vacation Time
This week I’ll be travelling up to Washington
State to attend my 45th high school
reunion on Saturday. Don’t tell me I’m
getting old, I don’t feel 63. There will be
former classmates there that I have not seen
since we were 18. Now that I’m retired, I
have some time to make it some of these
occasions.
Minor League Baseball
The Sactown Rivercats is the name of the
San Francisco Giants AAA minor league
baseball team here in Sacramento. I attended
one of their games last week. They have a
new ballpark down by the American River
in downtown Sacramento. We sat on the
grass berm behind right field which also has
a kids play area. But, the best part of all
was what they call the “Thirsty Thursday”
promotion, $2 cold ones! Now that is worth
the price of admission. “Take me out to the
Ball Game” takes on a whole new meaning
on Thursdays.
Stuck With Me
Since I really didn’t get any serious
volunteers to take my place writing this
blogger-a-roo, I guess you will have to tolerate
me some more. My offer still stands, if
you want to shut me up, then take my place.
