News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
Happ y 100th
Happy Birthday greetings go out to
long-time Hawthorne resident, community
activist, city council critic and
three-time council candidate, Frances Stiglich,
who turns 100 years of age this month. It
was just a few of years ago that Francis was
walking the streets of Hawthorne campaigning
to win election for a seat on the city
council. She was bound and determined to
shake things up. If there ever was someone
who told it like it is, it is Frances. Recently,
Frances has been spending most of her
time down in San Diego living with her son.
But during her time here, she was always
looking out for ways to improve Hawthorne.
As an example she didn’t like all the chewing
gum being thrown on the sidewalks by
the kids walking to school so tried to get
the school officials to teach the children not
to. She wanted to organize her homeowners
group for her part of North Hawthorne.
She always thought that the mayor and the
male council members should wear suits
and ties to the council meetings and she
literally brought ties to give to the young,
single governing officials. She was active
in the Hawthorne Historical Society and
would personally relate to stories from her
over 80 years of living in the City of Good
Neighbors. But, her one wish that she had
that may not come true is her wish to fly to
the International SpaceStation or to Mars to
celebrate her century of life. Her years may
just run out before Elon is ready to send
humans to populate the red planet, but don’t
count Francis out, she will be traveling to
her homeland of Croatia to celebrate with
here family later this year. Happy 100 and
here’s to many more.
John Baker
Memorial Cruis e Night
John Baker was Mr. Cougar. He lived and
loved the Hawthorne High School/Beach Boys/
Hot Rod life. His sudden death dealt a blow
to the Cougartown website and to the very
popular social media experience that so many
HHS alums enjoyed. Facebook is somewhat
helping to keep these former Cougars together.
But, there is nothing like seeing each other
face to face and that is exactly what will happen
at Foster’s Freeze on Hawthorne Blvd.
In memory of John Baker, there will be a
cruise night on Saturday, July 21 from 5 to
9 p.m. Come out and get reunited with your
HHS friends. Cougartown is alive and well.
Tim e to Move On
It feels weird writing a newspaper
column about Hawthorne when I live
400 miles away. So, it’s only natural
for me to look to ease on out of my
role of the Happenings guy. I don’t
really know what’s happening since
I’m not there to see or hear it happen.
It just happens to be the right time for
someone else to take over this duty. Any
takers? It’s not a tough job. It’s just writing
down your thoughts and if they are stupid
enough then people will read them. I would
gladly train my replacement, if I could. How
do you teach people to be real? How do I
train others to write stupid stuff? Stupid is as
stupid is, right? There will never be another
me, but that’s okay. Someone else will have
to develop their own style, their own mantra,
their own slogans. It won’t be too difficult
to retain the 19 loyal readers that I once had
as they stay alive, we are currently down to
17 since two of my readers died recently.
Hopefully the ideal replacement writer would
have a large, supportive, extended family that
will not ridicule them like I’ve had to endure
for keeping this thing going after my spiel
broke a long time ago. I’ll keep on going
with this until someone, anyone, emails me
to take control of this shipwreck. I need to
spend more quality time with my old lady,
drink one more cold one per week, take a
dip in my pool when the temp hits 100. I
need to move on. We’ve had a great run
together. I will miss you, but life goes on.
Life is short, so we need to live it. God loves
you and me so let’s have a cold one. I look
forward to having several of you emailing
me to say, yes, I help want to keep this going.
Thanks in advance for volunteering to
fill my shoes. Enjoy.
Heat and Fir ewor ks Sal es
and Random Tho ughts
It’s been hotter in Hawthorne than Orangevale.
I can only imagine how it must
have been the past week during the heatwave
of 2018. I hear the fireworks sales were
good this year, the Kiwanis Club made more
profit than what they had expected. The
World Cup soccer matches have been fun
to watch even with no USA team playing.
The drama and human emotions shown on
the faces of the winning and losing team’s
fans has been unbelievable. Soccer really
is the world’s sport. How many more days
until LaBron’s Lakers start their march to
the Finals? How many more years until the
Dodgers win a World Series? Life is fun,
life is good.
