Page 2 June 2, 2016 Hawthorne Happenings News for the ‘City of Good Neighbors’ From City Clerk Norb Huber Sold Out The Hawthorne community came together last Thursday for our annual Community BBQ Dinner in support of the K9 unit of the Hawthorne Police Department. It was such a good turn out that we ran out of food to serve to the latecomers. Thanks again to all the volunteers who made it possible. The presidents’ Council will be tallying up the totals raised from the ticket sales and auction and will be presenting a check to the HPD soon. Of course the stars of the show were the dogs themselves. Both the kids and adults loved to interact with our K9 officers and their partners. My two-year old grandson, Wyatt, had a great time especially after papa bought him a smaller, stuffed version of Mido, see photo. It’s because of the hard work of our force that my family’s four generations all can feel safe living here in Hawthorne. Red Light Controversy? I try to avoid controversy when considering what to write about each week. But, it’s tough not to talk about politics, religion, cold ones, my better half, or how my SF Giants are ahead of the Dodgers in the early season standings and how we have won three world championships in the last six years and how the Dodgers haven’t won a World Series since Ronald Reagan. I did hit a nerve with quite a few people when I touched on red light cameras. There seems to be various views on whether they are good, bad or ridiculous. A few thoughts were sent my way. “If that many people are running the light, then maybe it’s good that the cameras are there. Think how many more people would violate the law if they knew there were no cameras.” “If the cameras are good there, then why aren’t they at other intersections that have people running red lights all the time?” Another comment was, “It’s just a money grab by the City”. (Let me point out that Hawthorne gets a very small percentage of the total fees paid, after the county and state take their cut.) We will just have to wait until the current city council has to decide whether or not to renew the contract with the red light camera company. This is exactly why I enjoy being city clerk, I don’t have to push the button and vote. I can just sit around and make comments and play neutral and not make anyone really mad at me for voting against their wishes. Some people really do think a nice guy, maybe a drunkard, but a nice, friendly fellow. They must not know me very well. I do have to confess that I did have a cold one up in Chico this past weekend while playing golf in 95 degree weather. It’s nice to return to the cool climes of Hawthorne. Rabies Clinic The City of Hawthorne will once again offer a Rabies Clinic to all residents this Saturday, June 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City Hall located at 4455 W. 126th Street. The event will offer low cost rabies vaccinations, renewal of dog licenses, and low cost microchipping. These services are offered once a year by our animal control office here in the city. Holly Park Pancake Breakfast On Saturday, June 18th the Holly Park Homeowners Association will be sponsoring a pancake breakfast to help raise funds for their scholarship fund. It will be held at Olivet Lutheran Church located just East of Crenshaw on Imperial Highway. Times for the event is from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. • Email me at: norbhuber@gmail.com Classifieds The deadline for Classified Ad submission and payment is Noon on Tuesday to appear in Thursday’s paper.
