A second formal review by CalRecycle will take place during the fall of 2020, once the 2019 annual reports have been submitted by localities. By the summer of 2021, the state will analyze the effectiveness of the program as a whole. “ If CalRecycle determines that the statewide disposal of organic waste in 2020 has not been reduced by fifty percent of the level of disposal during 2014, the organic recycling requirements on businesses will expand to cover businesses that generate two cubic yards or more of commercial solid waste per week,” states the state website. “Additionally, certain exemptions may no longer be available if this target is not met. The city expects the operational costs to have a significant impact on the effectiveness of the program. Since the new business practice will make food waste diversion mandatory, rates will be shared across all commercial businesses in order to be effective as a city and to encourage others to participate. “The City’s waste hauler, Consolidated Disposal Service/Republic Services will provide education and outreach to commercial customers through letters, instructional brochures, and personal visits to the business location,” states the staff report. “The visits will include the distribution of posters and individual training on how to identify organics and how to separate organics from trash or other nonrecyclable solid waste.” • Inside This Issue Certified & Licensed Professionals.......................4 Classifieds............................2 Finance..................................3 Food.......................................5 Hawthorne Happenings....2 Legals................................ 5-7 Pets........................................8 Police Reports.....................3 Sports....................................4 Weekend Forecast Friday Sunny 75˚/63˚ Saturday Mostly Sunny 77˚/63˚ Sunday Mostly Sunny 73˚/61˚
