The Cougars attempted to rally with one run each in the sixth and seventh. In the bottom of the sixth, Casillas tripled home Natalie Rocha, who boarded first base on an error. Hawthorne scored its final run on a base hit from Kassandra Perez in the seventh. The Cougars had a shot at pulling the game out but Rocha and Anana Hernandez each struck out to end the threat. “We had the bases loaded with our numberthree, four and five batters up,” Hawthorne assistant coach Armando Casillas said. “We couldn’t get the key hit.” Casillas went 2-for-3 with one RBI and a run scored, including a triple. Casillas was the starting pitcher, allowing four runs, two of those earned. For Monrovia, which ended its season at 12-14 with a 5-2 loss to host and the playoffs’ top seed North Torrance in the first round last Thursday at North. Diaz was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs. St. Mary’s, Lawndale Fail to Advance Article and photos by Joe Snyder A poor start plagued Hawthorne High’s softball team as it was eliminated in the wildcard round of the CIF-Southern Section Division IV playoffs by Monrovia, 6-4, on May 17 at Hawthorne. With the loss, the Cougars ended its season at 18-10. Hawthorne was the third place team from the Ocean League. The Wildcats, who finished third in the Rio Hondo League, got on Hawthorne starting pitcher Alyssa Casillas as Vicky Gutierrez hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. Monrovia added two more runs in the third to make it 4-0 before the Cougars finally got things going. Hawthorne came back with two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of throwing errors. The Wildcats pulled away with two more runs in the top of the sixth, behind a run-scoring double from Samantha Diaz. Monrovia’s other run was scored on a throwing miscue, scoring Diaz. St. Mary’s Academy’s girls’ track and field team from Inglewood and Lawndale High’s boys had athletes compete in last Saturday’s CIF-Southern Section Divisional Championships at Cerritos College but neither school was able to get any athletes to Friday’s Southern Section Masters Championships which will be at the same place. Both managed to have some fine performances. The Belles best efforts were fourth place finishes by, freshman Isreal Conerly, junior Aaryn Smith and their 4x400-meter relay squad. Conerly took the spot in the 400-meter run in 57.4 seconds. Winning the race was Westlake Village Oaks Christian’s Carolyn Wilson timing 55.12. Smith finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles at 46.83 seconds. She placed behind champion Lulu Gilbert of Ventura St. Bonaventure (44.56), runner-up Jordann Feinstein of Westlake Village Oaks Chrsitian (44.97) and third place Brianna Smith from Lancaster Paraclete (46.28). The Wildcats eliminated the Cougars, 6-4.  relay, St. Mary’s quartet of senior Jade Jones, Smith, freshman Isreal Conerly and junior Ziquisha Reed were fourth clocking four minutes and 1.84 seconds. The Belles finished behind champion Oaks Christian (3:55.09), second place Los Angeles-Bel Air Marymount (3:57.88) and third place Ojai Nordhoff (4:00.66). In the Southern Section Boys’ Division II finals, Lawndale’s best performance was a sixth place finish by senior Kiyaam Cooksey in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 40.6. Winning the race was Mission Viejo junior Quinn Williams 38.310. Seniors Daniel Sun and Jalen Gill, both from Irvine Woodbridge, were second and third clocking 38.31 and 38.32, in order. Cooksey also competed in the 110-meter high hurdles but was ninth (last place) at 15.57. Senior Khalil Dorsey from Ontario Colony won the race clocking 14.07. Cooksey was Ocean League champion in both hurdles events. Another Lawndale athlete competed in the long jump in Jalen Walker where he finished ninth with a leap of 20 feet, seven and a half inches. Walker was also Ocean League champion at the event. Animo Baseballers Advance The Animo Leadership High baseball team from Inglewood got past the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division VII playoffs by rolling over Valley Torah from Valley Village 14-3 last Friday at Urban Youth Baseball Academy at El Camino College-Compton Center. The Aztec-Eagles moved to the second round where they played San Jacinto Valley Academy at a site to be determined last Tuesday. If they win they will play in the quarterfinals Friday at 3:15 p.m. Animo was led by senior Cesar Rocha, who collected two hits in four at-bats, while adding two RBIs and one run scored. Sophomore Damian Carrillo went 2-for-4 with a run. Senior Ernesto Lucas was one-for-three with three RBI’s and a double. Senior Erik Lopez went one-for-two with three runs and drove in two runs. Sergio Orejel and Brian Rocha each had two stolen bases. Junior winning pitcher went six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits. He struck out five batters and walked three. •
