May 26, 2016 Page 3 Hawthorne Happenings News for the ‘City of Good Neighbors’ From City Clerk Norb Huber K-9 Dinner this Thursday The Hawthorne Presidents’ Council will be hosting our annual Community K-9 BBQ dinner on Thursday, May 26 starting at 5 p.m. The HPD’s K9 squad will be there and will show the crowd a few of the dogs’ talents. Dinner tickets are $5 for adults and $2.50 for children. A raffle is held to raise additional funds. We thank all the volunteers and Victor’s Meats for making this event possible. Red Light Cameras After church services this past Sunday, a fellow parishioner asked me about the red light cameras located on Rosecrans by Costco. I had just gotten my coffee and donut, if you’re a good Lutheran you have to have coffee every Sunday during “coffee hour”, so I sat down to hear his sad story of how he was making the left hand turn onto Hindry Avenue and an elderly, female driver in front of him suddenly slowed down in the middle of the turn. He was caught in the middle of the intersection when he saw the flash of the camera. It was done. Nothing was left to be done other than to anxiously wait for his ticket to arrive via US mail. He went online to see that 697 tickets had been given out in March of 2016 alone for that same violation at that same intersection. At $480, I told him to go home, pay the fine, and go find something cold in his ice box. What to do about the Homeless? Did you hear that there is a movement to tax California’s millionaires to help solve our homeless problem? Is money going to solve what many people say is an unsolvable problem? Do we build more shelters? Do we make small structures out on the streets? Do we give out vouchers for the homeless to use for housing? Do we hire more counselors to go and try to help? There are many reasons so many people are homeless. It’s not a crime to be homeless. Because of recent court rulings, the police are restricting on how they can interact with people living on public property. The population of SoCal is still growing and our homeless population is increasing steadily. There is no easy solution. As long as our housing costs remain high, I have a feeling that this will be an ongoing problem for years to come. Maybe Elon came come up with a solution. New Park Hawthorne has a new park. Actually, it’s not too new. The park in question is located at 118th and Doty Avenue in the northern part of Hawthorne. It has been a grassy area for over a year, made possible by an organization called, Lots to Spots. The city council is in the process of officially naming it Good Neighbors Park. Things Hawthorne is Missing I love lists. There are lists for everything. Here is a list of some of the things that Hawthorne is missing. A golf course or at least a driving range, a hospital, shopping center, a restaurant row, a cemetery, a firing range, more soccer fields, more parks, a dog park, a civic center with a grassy area and fountain and the Jim Thorpe football that was stolen from the Memorial Center’s glass case. Rabies Clinic The City of Hawthorne will once again offer a Rabies Clinic to all residents on Saturday, June 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the City Hall located at 4455 W. 126th Street. The event will offer low cost rabies vaccinations, renewal of dog licenses, and low cost microchipping. These services are offered once a year by our animal control office here in the city. Holly Park Pancake Breakfast On Saturday, June 18th the Holly Park Homeowners Association will be sponsoring a pancake breakfast to help raise funds for their scholarship fund. It will be held at Olivet Lutheran Church located just East of Crenshaw on Imperial Highway. Times for the event is from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. • Email me at: norbhuber@gmail.com Classifieds The deadline for Classified Ad submission and payment is Noon on Tuesday to appear in Thursday’s paper.
