Hawthorne Happenings
Community K9 Dinner
The Hawthorne Presidents Council
will be hosting a community BBQ dinner
this Thursday, May 24 beginning
at 5 p.m. at the Hawthorne Memorial
Center. There will be a raffle and all
funds raised the evening will go to
the HPD’s K9 unit. The dinner ticket price
is only $5 for adults and $2.50 for children.
Memorial Day
This Monday, we pay tribute to all of the
men and women who have given the ultimate
in service to our great nation, Memorial Day.
This is not just a day to BBQ and have a cold
one, this is a day to give thanks to God for
the soldiers who have provided our country
with freedom and peace. The Hawthorne
American Legion Post and the VFW Post
will jointly host our Memorial Day ceremony
beginning at 10 a.m. out in front of the Betty
Ainsworth Center by the Memorial Center.
Cougartown on Facebook
All of you alums of Hawthorne High now
can post and communicate with one another
once again. Robert Jensen, a member of the
class of ’71, has taken the time to start a new
Facebook page entitled Cougartown. Check
it out. The very popular posting site entitled
cougartown.com had been closed down
since the unexpected death of John Baker
the originator and facilitator of the site. It’s
great to stay in touch with your classmates
and friends from HHS. Go Cougs!
Holly Park Homeowner’s
Association Pancake Breakfast
The Holly Park Homeowners will once again
be hosting a pancake breakfast scholarship
fundraiser on Saturday, June 16th at Olivet
Lutheran Church. Mark your calendars for
this fun event.
How Do I Say Thank You?
I would love to invite my 19 loyal readers
to a thank you party so that I can thank you
personally for sticking with me and reading
my column. It would be a really honor
and joy to have a cold one and some pizza
together with some of you before I depart
for greener pastures. Of course, ice tea or
soda will be available for you non-alcoholic
cold one drinkers. This gathering of sorts
will be held on Saturday, June 9th beginning
at 5 p.m. at the Pizza Show on Hawthorne
Blvd. Please RSVP by emailing me back.
Space is limited so the first 19 to respond get
in. The deadline to RSVP is Thursday June
7th. There is a $10 charge for your food
and drink which you can pay that evening.
Please use my special code when reserving
your spot to prove that you are one of my
readers. The code is: “Have A Cold One!”
Best of all, you will be able to meet the
best thing Hawthorne has ever given to me,
my ol’ lady.
I’m Not Dead Yet
The Hawthorne Historical Society
honored two great men, a long-standing
Hawthorne, family-owned business and
a legionary service club last Saturday
at their annual Hall of Fame banquet
held at the Ayers Hotel. Then they
tried to remain the Good Neighbors Award
after me by changing it to “Norb Huber-Good
Neighbors” Award. I appreciate the gesture
but I had to remind them of an ordinance
passed by the city council saying that anything
in the City named after a person requires that
person to be dead. My ol’ lady might think
I’m half dead but I don’t think I’m fully dead
yet. As City Clerk, I would indicate that this
name change is not allowed.
Hawthorne Mall
Enough is enough. When I moved to
Hawthorne in 1977 the Plaza Mall was brand
new. It was only open for about 20 years
and now it’s been closed for 20 years. Last
week we found out the owner was using
anything possible to get someone to be a
tenant. It’s time for the City and the powers
that be to take direct steps to force the
hand of the owner. Either he sells it or he
must forfeit the property to Hawthorne. We
have lost millions of dollars in lost revenue
over the two decades that it has been shuttered.
Hawthorne’s city center has been an
eyesore far too long. The good neighbors
of Hawthorne deserve something better. My
idea of a terminal entry to the tunnel network
being built by Elon’s Boring Company
makes a lot of sense. People could drive to
the terminal, park their cars there and hop
on to the fast, clean skates that will whisk
them under our freeways. Could someone
ask Elon to help us out?
Life and Death
We just got word yesterday that a longtime
church friend and fellow member of the Hawthorne
Historical Society, Jim Weishaar, was
found dead in his retreat home in the high
desert area. He had been having some health
issues recently but was still very active and
had just returned from a two week driving
trip across the country visiting friends and
family with his son. His death is a shocker
to all of us. But knowing our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ makes our shock and
grief manageable. Yes, death separates us
from our loved ones, but we take comfort
knowing Jim is reunited with his wife and
home with his Savior.
