Now, low and behold, I find out that I have a few loyal readers just south of our border. No, my column is not printed in Spanish and smuggled through the virtual wall down by Tijuana. I am talking about South of Rosecrans here, our friendly neighbors in Lawndale Acres. Since there seems to be a shortage of news reporters in both of our communities, I guess they settle for anything that comes into of my head and onto my computer to fill copy space. Hawthorne has always felt superior to Lawndale. We have always been bigger, meaner, had far more celebrities grow up in our city, and survived more political scandals than our cute, little neighbor to the South. Being a Good Neighbor, I am here to speak up for Lawndale. The city once known for junker cars in driveways and shanty houses, has cleaned up its act. The city leaders like to keep a quiet, confident style of leading the city around any small controversy. For decades Lawndale has been financially solid with a reserve fund close to its operating budget. Lawndale is home to the largest performing arts center on any high school campus in CA. It has the CIF Girls basketball champions over at Leuzinger. Roy Rogers hung out in Lawndale for a few years before heading to the open spaces out in the desert. Years ago, one of Lawndale’s civic leaders proposed building a replica of the leaning tower of Pizza as a tourist attraction. Instead, they constructed one of the tallest and brightest electronic signboards along the 405 freeway that everyone ridiculed. It’s funny, now Hawthorne has not one but two of the similar type signboards up along our busy streets. Around 1910, land was being sold in the new settlements of Lawndale and Hawthorne for $75 a lot. Financing was offered. The lots were very conveniently located on the rail car line that led to Redondo. Oh, how things have changed. My column just wouldn’t sound right if we named it “Lawndale Links”, people would think I was a lunatic. Anyway, greetings to our southern neighbors. You are welcome to cross the border, spend your money here, and then go back to your quiet little outpost. Easter Egg Hunt This Saturday, April 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m the North Hawthorne Homeowners Association will be hosting an Easter Egg Hunt at Eucalyptus Park located at Inglewood Avenue and 122nd Street. Kids of all ages are invited to attend. If the eggs are full of candy, then I am there! Historical Society’s Hall of Fame Banquet The Hawthorne Historical Society is sponsoring their annual Hawthorne Hall of Fame banquet on Friday, May 19th at the Ayres Hotel. The 2017 inductees include: Mr. John Baker, founder of “Cougartown. com”, The 100 year-old Womens Club of Hawthorne, Mihaly “Michu” Meszaro, longtime resident of Hawthorne, was a circus performer/entertainer and stuntman and is best remembered as a performer with  Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus  and for his role in the  NBC  sitcom  ALF. He was 2 feet 9 inches (84 cm) tall. The shortest street in Hawthorne is named after him. Eddings Brothers has been selected as the business honoree for their long time service to the community. Tickets to the banquet are now on sale. For more information regarding this festive evening, please contact the Historical Society at 310-643-9157. “Stand Your Ground” Symposium The Hawthorne community is invited to attend a symposium entitled, “Stand Your Ground”- Fighting Sexual Assault Together. The non-profit, Resolve to Rise, has partnered with the Hawthorne Police Department to bring the community this first annual symposium. It is scheduled to take place Saturday, April 15th at 10:00  in the Hawthorne Memorial Center. Resolve to Rise is a nonprofit in the city of Hawthorne dedicated to stopping and preventing sexual assault by raising awareness, education, empowerment and prevention. Many topics will be covered in this very informative symposium. Sexual assault and human trafficking are on the rise. We all need to be aware and help prevent these crimes from happening. Service Provider Fair Councilmember Angie Reyes English and the City of Hawthorne presents the annual Service Provider Fair at Memorial Park this year on April 22nd. There will be many vendors giving out great information. Lunch and prizes are always a big hit with the attendees each year. Volunteer Appreciation Day The volunteers of Hawthorne will be honored once again with a special event hosted by the Hawthorne Presidents Council on Sunday, April 23rd at the Memorial Center. Palm Sunday Holy Week begins this Sunday with Palm Sunday. The people of Jerusalem welcomed Jesus as their king and savior, but little did they know that by week’s end he would be nailed to a cross and die. But their sorrow gave way to joy, death led to life for all. The cross is a sign of joy for Christians who remember what Jesus did for them on that Good Friday.
