By Cristian Vasquez The State of California has named Thelma Meléndez de Santa Ana to lead the still struggling Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD), making her the fifth appointee to take on the challenge of fixing the troubled district. State Superintendent Tom Torlakson appointed Meléndez to the position while ensuring that Inglewood’s school district has been making progress since declaring bankruptcy in 2012. “Thelma Meléndez has a strong combination of leadership skills and experience managing school districts. She will continue the District’s positive momentum,” said Torlakson through a statement. However, for Classified Employees Field Representative Christopher Graeber, the change in leadership puts employees at a disadvantage and reflects the ongoing inability by the State to provide the District with stable leadership. “We had just met with the District for negotiations, but there is a bad history that we have lived through in the past with Ken Taylor, Dr. Brann and more recently Matthews,” Graeber said. “Our people have been fighting, working and living in Inglewood and we have seen very little progress. We are told this person will fix this; that person will fix that--and all we get are high hopes from the school district with very little results.” Meléndez will take over the 11,000-student school district on August 16, vacating her position as Office of Educational Services with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Meléndez’s experience in education began with her teaching in Montebello before transitioning to Superintendent of Pomona Unified School District, and then moved on to fulfill the same functions with the Santa Ana Unified School District. Her political experience includes serving as Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education in the U.S. Department of Education under President Obama. Prior to her position with LAUSD, Meléndez worked as Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s top education advisor. However, IUSD presents a set of unique challenges including a dwindling student population, a $55 million loan debt due to the State, and low proficiency levels among students. State testing from last year demonstrates that 29 percent of IUSD students are either proficient/better than proficient in English and16 percent See School Board page 8 Inside This Issue Certified & Licensed Professionals.......................7 Classifieds............................3 Community Briefs...............2 Entertainment......................4 Legals................................ 6-7 Pets........................................5 Police Reports.....................3 Seniors..................................2 Sports....................................8 Weekend Forecast Friday Sunny 78˚/69˚ Saturday Sunny 79˚/68˚ Sunday Sunny 76˚/67˚
