Hawthorne Happenings
News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
The Filing Period
is Still Open
There have been several people pull
papers for each of the open seats for the
upcoming Hawthorne city election to be held
this November but there is still time to file to
run. The filing period will end on August 10th
for all positions except for City Clerk which
will end on August 15th at 5 p.m. Here is a
list of people who have pulled papers so far:
For City Council: L. David Patterson, Olivia
Valentine, Angie Reyes English, Jason Gromski,
Alex Monteiro, and Timothy Hagerty. For
City Treasurer: L. David Patterson and Ryan
Richard. For City Clerk: Dr. Paul Jimenez
and John L. Jefferson. It’s not too late to get
involved and run for a city office.
Cruise Night and
High School Reunion
I hear that the HHS Cougar Cruise Night
was well attended and was great time. I was
up in Shelton, WA last Saturday attending my
45 high school reunion. It was nice to see
some old friends. I remembered most of the
basketball and football players since I hung
out with most of the jocks back then. I was
saddened to see that 29 of my classmates are
no longer with us and several of my teammates
are in declining health and could not attend.
Our star football player who later played with
the Seattle Seahawks died recently from complications
related to head trauma. The NFL
was doing testing to see if his condition was
due to his playing days. Football is a violent
sport these days and parents have to now decide
whether they want their sons taking the risk
of head injury. I did get a few people commenting
that I looked the same as I looked
back in high school. I guess teaching high
school kids for 41 years has kept me
youngish looking. Maybe all of those
cold ones have something to do with it.
100th Birthday
Greetings
The address to send birthday cards
to Frances Stiglich to wish her well on
her 100th birthday is: 12316 Dormouse
Road, San Diego, CA 92129. Frances always
loved Hawthorne and we all loved her “tell it
like it is” style whenever she spoke at a city
council meeting.
Hot, Dry and Smoky
I’m writing this from Bend, OR where it’s
hot, dry and smoky due to the wildfires that
are burning in Southern and Central Oregon.
There were reports of over 160 fires burning
that were ignited by lightening strikes.
We stopped to visit relatives in this popular
vacation and outdoors mecca. Many Californians
have moved here and work out of their
homes using the internet. They have escaped
the Bay Area or LA and enjoy skiing in the
winter and warm summer temps and a lot of
outdoor opportunities. My ol’ lady loves to
shop up here since there is no sales tax in
Oregon. The lakes and streams are full of
fish. The campgrounds are full. There are
many golf courses to enjoy. You just have
to enjoy the colder temps during six to eight
months of the year. Some good snow storms
usually come through. And finally, like most
hip and happening places, they have plenty
of microbreweries and wineries. Seems like
where ever I go, most everyone enjoys their
cold ones. Like always, try to stay cool, have
a cold one.
Keep Me Informed
Drop me an email and let me know of what
is happening in Hawthorne or any special
event coming up. I depend on my 17 readers
to keep me in the loop.

Equipment Warranties 101:
What You Should Know
(BPT) - From smartphones to mattresses,
almost everything you buy comes with some
kind of warranty. How can you ensure you get
the most benefit from a warranty, especially
for a major investment that’s also critical to
the comfort of your home, like a new furnace?
“Warranties are meant to assure a homeowner
that the furnace they’re purchasing will do what
it’s supposed to, is free of defects and meets
applicable government regulations or standards,”
says Chip Wade, HGTV expert. “However,
warranties are often very specific about the
circumstances under which the manufacturer
will repair or replace the furnace if it doesn’t
work properly.
Because written warranties are legally binding
documents, you may come across unfamiliar
terms as you’re reading yours, including:
Product warranty - This is the guarantee that
comes from the company that manufactures the
furnace. Contractors and installers may offer
extended warranties that apply to their work,
including the labor required to install the furnace.
YORK(R) is one of the only manufacturers
that manages their own extended warranties.
Warranty term - The length of time the
coverage is offered is called the warranty term.
These can vary significantly; however, YORK(R)
heating and cooling offers a lifetime heat exchanger
warranty on its YORK(R) Affinity(TM)
gas furnaces. In addition, YORK(R) offers the
Complete Assurance(TM) Warranty Pledge with
this furnace. If the heat exchanger fails within
10 years of installation, YORK(R) provides
optional furnace replacement in lieu of heat
