Hawthorne Happenings
News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
Election Time is
Fast Approaching
The filing period is coming up for
the November election for the two
Hawthorne city council seats, the city clerk
and the city treasurer’s positions. If you
are a resident of Hawthorne, a registered
voter, and over the age of 18, then you
are qualified to run for one of these positions.
The City Clerk’s office is the place
to pull papers. You must collect a minimum
of 20 signatures from registered voters in
Hawthorne. The filing period is July 16-August
10th, except for the City Clerk. Since
the last City Clerk ducked out of town and
called it quits, the filing period is extended
by five days for his seat. There is no filing
fee, however if you want a candidate’s statement
to appear in the voters’ pamphlet, the
fees are $1,000 a piece for English and/or
Spanish. I assume if you wish to publish
your statement in German for the 19 Germans
left in Hawthorne then the fee would also be
$1,000. I would recommend that you spend
your money instead on buying cold ones for
that voter block since beer is the national
language of Germany.
4th of July Week
When the 4th is on a Wednesday, the
entire week seems like a big long celebration.
Of course in Hawthorne the fireworks,
mostly illegal ones, start going off a month
in advance. I know all of the noise of the
4th is distracting, irritating, annoying, maddening,
and downright dangerous to humans
and animals. Okay, most of this pyromaniac
crap is done just out of routine. These idiots
who shoot them off are doing it because of
the thrill of waking everyone up with a big
boom in the middle of the night. No matter,
I still love our Independence Day. I love
what it represents. I ask whether there is
something wrong with being patriotic and
loving our country and loving our military
and loving our peace officers and loving all
those other true, red-white-and-blue, God
fearing, gun totting, red blooded Americans
who love this the greatest country in the
history of the world? At the start of every
Kiwanis Club meeting we sing, God Bless
America. I love it. I love the feeling of
unity it brings. I love that we are asking
God to bless this great place where
we are so fortunate to live. God has
blessed us greatly, so wear the flag
shirts, put your flags out in front of
your house, enjoy some hot dogs and
cold ones and be thankful we live in
the “Land of the Free”.
John Baker Memorial
Cruise Night
John Baker was Mr. Cougar. He lived and
loved the Hawthorne High School/Beach
Boys/Hot Rod life. His sudden death dealt
a blow to the Cougartown website and to the
very popular social media experience that
so many HHS alums enjoyed. Facebook
is somewhat helping to keep these former
Cougars together. But, there is nothing like
seeing each other face to face and that is
exactly what will happen at Foster’s Freeze
on Hawthorne Blvd. In memory of John
Baker, there will be a cruise night on Saturday,
July 21 from 5 to 9 p.m. Come out and get
reunited with your HHS friends. Cougartown
is alive and well.
Norb’s NorCal Nuggets
What is different up here than down there?
It’s hotter, more old, white, retired, gray
haired guys shopping at Lowes, more bugs,
less illegal fireworks, less police activity,
less traffic, stars come out at night, smoke
blows in from the wild fires, more swimming
pools, there is a DQ about a mile
away from our house, there is more grass to
mow, everyone has air conditioning, people
actually say hi sometimes when you are out
for a walk. There are a few things that are
the same, cold ones are drunk up here just
like down there, my ol’ lady is still my ol’
lady who I love dearly, but still has her list
of requests for home settling jobs. You see
my life is dramatically different for sure.
Not only because of the change of location,
but because I retired at the same time. I am
very fortunate to be able to make this shift
in life style. I’m enjoying the less stress.
I’m enjoying seeing my grandkids. Life is
good, enjoy your adventure where you might
find yourself at.
No Good Neighbors Day or
Kiwanis Carnival this year
Just in case you were wondering, both
the Good Neighbors Day event and the annual
Kiwanis Club Carnival have been cancelled
for this year. Hopefully in 2019 both popular
events will return to the Hawthorne calendar.

solid support for a $49 parcel tax and recommended
the District continue outreach to
increase support for placing the initiative on the
ballot. The measure would require two-thirds
voter approval and is estimated to generate
$1.1 to 4.5 million in revenue for the District.
During public comments, a group from
City Honors spoke at length, objecting to the
recent transfer of the school’s principal, Dr.
Kiwiana Cain. Staff member Toya Massey
said, “City Honors is better because of her
leadership.” Graduate Kaia Farmer said,
“I’m going to UCLA in the fall, thanks to
Dr. Cain. I’ve had three principals since my
freshman year. Her leaving is not going to
help students.”
An alumni member of the group said, “Her
leaving will be a detriment to the students,
especially the senior class. They need stability.”
Another speaker talked about the programs
and internships Cain brought to City Honors.
“She developed relationships with the students.
Nobody can do that,” he said.
Chris Graeber, union representative for the
classified employees, announced he would be
joining the District’s personnel committee. In
other public comments, a group of parents
asked the Board to look into complaints
regarding the community liaison at La Tijera.
The Inglewood School Board meets once
monthly, unless otherwise noted. The next
meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 18,
at 5:30 p.m. at 401 S. Inglewood Ave., in the
Dr. Ernest Shaw Board Room. •
