Cruise Night at Fosters
Freeze
Calling all Hawthorne High School
Alums. June 22nd is the date set for another
Cruise Night at Fosters Freeze. All of the
details can be found somewhere on Facebook.
The weather should be a little nicer by then.
So, make plans to see your friends and old
classmates on the Blvd.
50th Year Class Reunion
for HHS Class of ’69
All Hawthorne High School Alums are
invited to attend a very special celebration
this September 20-21st at the Ayres Hotel in
Hawthorne. It will be the 50th Class Reunion
for the HHS Class of 1969. I’m old enough
to remember back to the sixties. It was quite
the time. Catch all the details of the reunion
by going to several postings on Facebook. It
looks like it will be a great time to reunite
with old friends and classmates.
Hawthorne Continues to
Make History Happen
Thanks to that world renown, smart guy
over there on Crenshaw Blvd. Hawthorne,
CA continues to be in the world news.
One day last week, SpaceX successfully
launched a telecommunications satellite into
orbit that will allow people in very remote
places on our globe to join us on the internet.
Several days later, Las Vegas announced
that they will be spending $47 million to
contract The Boring Company to dig a 2
mile long tunnel that will connect parts of
their convention center with other expedition
halls. Visitors will be able to move about
freely without going out into the scorching
desert heat. I know, us Hawthornians had
very little to do with these things happening,
but it’s still nice to live in the same city
where technology is leading the world in
innovations. Did you see the text/post that
Hawthorne PD released showing how fast
cars move about in the tunnel right here
under 120th Street in Hawthorne? There
was a split screen showing one car in the
tunnel and one car on surface streets fighting
the usual traffic. You can guess who won
the race. No speeding tickets were issued
in the tunnel.
Love, Proposal, Engagement,
Wedding Planning
Me and my old lady have been blessed
with three children and two grandchildren.
We are fortunate to live only four miles
away from our oldest daughter, son-in-law,
and our two grandkids who are 8 and 5
years of age now. Our youngest daughter,
Katie, chose to move up here to NorCal
with us last year. She met Paul via a
Christian dating service. They have been
dating for a while. Now for the good
stuff, they seemed to have fallen in
love. It’s been fun seeing this whole
love-thing progress. Paul asked me
for my daughter’s hand. I told him
he would have to take all of her,
not just her hand. He told me
secretly about the day that he was planning
to propose down on the beach by Santa Cruz.
It was fun to greet them when they returned
to our house to make the announcement. It
seems so refreshing to see two young people
who are so sincere and honest with each other.
Since they are both around 30 years of age,
they didn’t want to drag out a long engagement,
so immediately Katie, Linda, my ol’
lady, and Paul began the wedding planning.
Finding out when most of the relatives could
make the event, checking with our church to
see if that date was available and whether or
not Pastor was in town, finding a reception
venue was one of the biggest decisions, especially
for my wallet. Some people spend
their life’s savings on this one special day.
Everything seems to be going well. They
are planning on reciting their vows to each
other on Saturday, October 12th. I will be
there to walk Katie down the isle, of course
with tears in my eyes. For all of this tough
crap I write about here in this rambling, for
all the cold ones I tell people to drink and
relax, I’m just a softie inside. I wear my
emotions on my beer mug. All 17 of you
loyal readers, please remember to hoist a
cold one at 7 p.m. on 10/12/19 while I am
toasting the newly weds. As usual, I will
simply close my rambling speech that evening
with the same advice that I’ve been giving
out for years to you folks, “Have a Cold
One!” I almost forgot to tell you the bad
part of this love story, my future son-in-law,
Paul, does NOT drink. He seems like a nice
guy, like my other son-in-law came across
when he was courting my eldest. My, oh
my, how marriage changes things. Anyway,
I will still tell Paul to have a cold one, but
he will stick with his lemonade. Marriage
is for life, for better or worse, in sickness or
in health. I’ll let you know when he starts
having cold ones with me. If that kind of
commitment doesn’t scare someone to start
drinking, I don’t know what would.
