Wiseburn from page 3
School Board President JoAnne Kaneda
lauded the POD program, commenting on
the power of positive feedback for students.
“You never know what someone is going to
remember,” she said.
The Board later in the meeting tabled the
proposed plan to fund the construction of
the soccer field, which would have entailed
the District signing a lease agreement with
PNC Bank. Under that arrangement, Wiseburn
would spend around $172,000 yearly, for
seven years, to finance the field construction.
According to Silvers, the proposed
creative financing plan could save the District
about $200,000, as opposed to selecting
other options.
Juan Cabrillo Elementary Principal Lisa
Baggio quickly spoke to the Board regarding
a conference her administrative team recently
attended that she felt was extremely valuable
for the District. The conference was geared
towards ramping up the development of tiered
intervention programs that would support all
student needs. Baggio said that while Wiseburn
was already implementing a somewhat
similar program, attendees at the conference
were inspired by the presentation and left
with the understanding that the education
process needs to be constantly redesigned
to meet all students’ needs.
In member reports, Dr. Neil Goldman
spoke of the “magic in the classroom and
the difference-makers that we are all supporting,”
noting teacher appreciation week.
Board members Nelson Martinez and Roger
Banuelos gave kudos to all District teachers,
and Kaneda thanked the teachers. She noted
that as 2018/19 winds down, every year is
a new opportunity. She mentioned the accomplishments
in Wiseburn, spotlighting the
“big things and a ton of little things” that
sometimes go unnoticed.
In his comments, Silvers spoke about the
“little things” that had influenced him to
become a teacher and had made a major
impact on his educational life. He cited the
“positive, overt and subtle messages that are
going out to our kids” to help them feel “safe
and secure.” He also touted recent District
musical performances. “The kids and teachers
are phenomenal,” he said. He also mentioned
the high attendance at a recent elementary
family math night and the continued rampup
of school site safety. “What we are doing
here is good,” Silvers said.
After the members and administrators gave
their reports, the Board got down to the nuts
and bolts, approving various change orders as
the construction work continues at Wiseburn
High School.
One of the items on the agenda was
the retirement of 25-year employee Anita
Collins, who will soon be leaving her administrative
duties at Anza Elementary School.
Anza Principal Alberto Paredes emailed,
“Anita is an invaluable member of Anza.
No matter how busy she is, she will always
stop what she is doing to help someone in
need. We are all going to miss her.” Silvers
called Collins “an absolute pillar” of the
school and District. He called her retirement
a “tremendous loss to the organization”
that will leave “a gaping hole” in the Anza
educational community.
Upcoming on the Wiseburn calendar are
open house dates at Cabrillo and Burnett, with
the next School Board meeting calendared
for Thursday evening, May 30. •

resident’s car was towed. The action to grant
towing rights in the city to both companies
was passed unanimously, with Councilmember
Dotson absent. Morales said the referral
process goes through the police department
and is monitored to protect against possible
situations as mentioned above.
Several residents spoke on keeping the
issue of affordable housing and rent control
on the Council’s agenda. Julia Wallace
commented on the 8 percent cap instituted
by the Council last month, noting it is not
sustainable. Tiffany Wallace compared the
Inglewood measure to Los Angeles’ affordability,
pointing out that in Los Angeles
rent increases are capped at 3 percent. Wallace
criticized the Council, calling its rent
increase moratorium “a piecemeal action.”
She added, “A couple of people get help,
but not everyone gets help.”
A woman describing herself as a single
mother, born and raised in Inglewood, said
she is disheartened to hear the insensitivity
expressed by many toward the housing crisis
in the city. “I can’t afford a thousand-dollar
increase,” she said.
Resident Joseph Texeria gave an impassioned
description of the accident the Mayor
was involved in last week, seemingly blaming
the accident on alleged negligence.
Ken Williams, a business owner, noted
his beauty school at 242 N Market Street is
the only school currently here in Inglewood.
The family business represents 90 years of
history, he said.
During comments, Councilmember Alex
Padilla said, “We take the rent control moratorium
very seriously, as we’ve commented in
the past. Your concerns aren’t falling on deaf
ears.” Padilla also thanked Team Prime Time
and the Clippers for sponsoring a basketball
tournament at Crozier Middle School between
Oak Street and Warren Lane.
Additionally, Padilla asked the public to be
cautious of the construction on La Brea from
Florence to 64th Street. “Be patient, maybe
take other streets. And let’s make sure we
keep our construction workers safe,” he said.
The Inglewood City Council meets every
Tuesday, unless otherwise noted, at 2 p.m.
in the Council Chambers on the 9th floor,
Inglewood City Hall. •

the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a
trustee auction does not automatically entitle
you to free and clear ownership of the property.
You should also be aware that the lien being
auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are
the highest bidder at the auction, you are or
may be responsible for paying off all liens
senior to the lien being auctioned off, before
you can receive clear title to the property. You
are encouraged to investigate the existence,
priority, and size of outstanding liens that may
exist on this property by contacting the county
recorder’s office or a title insurance company,
either of which may charge you a fee for
