Inglewood PD Welcomes Six
New Employees and 11 Officers
Inglewood Morning Sessions with
NBA and Local Great Paul Pierce
Director/producer Jay Gerren announced
that he is completing the final edit of his documentary
Inglewood Morning Sessions with
the recently retired NBA superstar and former
Inglewood High School standout Paul Pierce.
Inglewood Morning Sessions tells the true story
of Lt. Scott Collins and his early morning
mentoring program to keep young men off
the streets. Lt. Collins started as an assistant
baseball coach at the age of 15. He always
knew that he wanted a career that involved
helping people and became an officer at the
Inglewood Police Department at the age of
22. It was there that he noticed that many of
the troubled youth that he came into contact
with shared a common thread -- no real father
figure to guide them. Lt. Collins decided to
fill that void and became a volunteer coach
with the Inglewood Police Athletic League
(PAL) and later started his Inglewood
Morning Sessions when a young Paul Pierce
wandered into his life. The early morning
sessions were rigorous workouts, but filled
with enthusiasm and sports talk. Pierce noted
recently, “I want to thank Scott for not just
being a father figure to me, but for the city
of Inglewood.”
Lt. Collins went on to guide and mentor
other notable athletes including Stais Boseman
(USC basketball), Lawrence Jackson (NFL)
and Jason Hart (USC assistant basketball
coach). While mentoring and giving so much
of himself, Lt. Collins had to endure the
greatest hardship that a father might experience.
During that period, he was conflicted
with being able to reach so many other youth
through his coaching and mentoring… but
was also concerned if his own son might fall
victim to the streets. In 2005, Lt. Collins’
son was shot and murdered in North Las
Vegas. Only now is he ready to talk about
his overwhelming worries during that time
about his son.
“Something that I have learned in my life,
as a result of becoming a parent, is that my
one of my greatest joys was experiencing
the birth of my kids and raising them,” Lt.
Collins said. “My greatest pain has been the
death of my son, Steven Joshua Collins. But I
am a person who loves life, and I love living.
My son’s death has given me the ultimate
courage and strength to carry on in my life
with him as my guardian angel above.”
This is Jay Gerren’s second documentary
feature. His first, entitled Searching for Mentors,
can now be seen on Amazon. “We are
in the final edits of the film and we hope
to have it in front of the viewing audience
soon,” Gerren said.
