Council Celebrates Milestone
for Dr. Wanda M. Brown
By Haleemon Anderson
On Tuesday, the Inglewood City Council
honored one of its own in lauding City
Treasurer Dr. Wanda M. Brown as the longestserving
elected official in the community. “It’s
a pretty special day,” said Mayor James T.
Butts. “We want to honor her for 31 years
of excellence. She is without peer.”
Congresswoman Maxine Waters was on
hand to make a presentation to Brown. Waters
congratulated her and presented her with a
commendation from her office. “We are very
dear friends,” said Waters. “And you have
been very fortunate to have her.”
Butts said Brown has kept the City fiscally
sound, balancing the budget and finding investments
that produce well. “She has seen
the decline and the resurgence of the city,”
Butts noted.
Brown thanked the group and said her
reputation for never losing a single cent of
the City’s money is quite true. During her
report, Brown said, “It’s been a blessing to
see the City come from ruins almost to where
it is today. I’m very grateful and thank you
all for the recognition.”
In public comments on the agenda, resident
Diane Sambrano took umbrage with Item
5 on the consent calendar -- approval of a
billboard lease. “There is more and more
advertising in the community,” said Sambrano,
noting residents fought to keep these kinds
of postings at bay. “They are distracting to
drivers. Sambrano added that she doubts
the products advertised will be available for
purchase in Inglewood.
Resident Willie Agee voiced support for
Item 7 -- a contract with Tender Loving Care
Catering to provide meals for the senior center.
The Council opened a public hearing on a
resolution of necessity to acquire properties
adjacent to the proposed Century Boulevard
Improvements project. Bruce Gridley, attorney
for the City, reported on negotiations with
the property owners. “We’ve looking at the
most compatible deal with the most public
good and the least amount of injury,” he said
Representative Mark Cohen from Graham
Pacific, LLC said the City’s offer may not
be one in good faith. He said proposed lane
changes and center island improvements may
significantly decrease drive-up clientele. Another
representative, J. Subanio, said, “Under
eminent domain, the only people who win
are the lawyers.”
Sambrano objected to the action. Two letters
from the counsel representing the Moezzi
family, and from Armando and Patricia Navarro
of Centwood, LLC were entered into
the record. Both entities objected to offers
made by the City, citing fair market values.
The project is designed to enhance mobility
by increasing handicapped access and widening
sidewalks on the busy thoroughfare. It
will also increase safety and beautify Century
Boulevard, adding center medians and other
amenities, according to Butts. The mayor
reminded the audience that the project has
nothing to do with the NFL stadium. “It’s been
on the books for over seven years,” he said.
Councilmember Ralph Franklin pointed
out the heavy traffic on that stretch. “Over
159,000 vehicles per day travel that route,”
he said. “And we are adding cycling lanes.”
After public comments, the Council adopted
the resolution unanimously.
Councilmember Alex Padilla announced
the Rotary Club will host a day of giving
April 4. Other upcoming events in his district
include an art show in the La Tijera Village
on May 19. On May 26, at Station 172, a
firefighters service day will be held.
Butts asked that the meeting be adjourned
in the honor of Cale B. Jones and Roslyn
Sellars.
The Inglewood City Council meets every
Tuesday, unless otherwise noted, at 2 p.m.
in the council chambers on the 9th floor,
Inglewood City Hall. •

service. As treasurer, Brown has kept the City solvent through challenging times.
