City of Inglewood’s Business and Recycling
Each day the average American throws out
4 1/2 pounds of trash. In the past, most of this
trash was buried in landfills. Today, our landfills
are filling up quickly. Recycling is one of the
easiest ways that we can reduce the amount
of waste sent to landfills.
The Environmental Services is responsible for
implementing various programs to meet state
mandated waste reduction goals. California
law, Assembly Bill 939, which states that all
cities in the State must divert 50 percent of
their waste stream by 2000 and maintain this
diversion rate. In response to Assembly Bill
939, the California Integrated Waste Management
Act, Inglewood has continued to work
to provide economical and efficient ways for
residents and businesses to recycle.
Each year, the City diverts more than 50,000
tons of trash from landfills, enough to fill 5,000
trash trucks. End to end, these trucks would
span nearly 35 miles.
Through grants from the CalRecycle, and
the California Department of Conservation, the
Environmental Division administers a Used Oil
Recycling program to promote the recycling of
used oil, latex paint, car batteries, anti-freeze,
and used oil filters, and a Litter abatement and
bottle recycling program.
Mandatory Commercial Recycling
for Multi-Family and Commercial
Businesses
Businesses are required to recycle on and
after July 1, 2012. To ensure that your business
is doing its part in “Going Green” and that
your practices are in compliance with the new
mandatory commercial recycling requirement,
please follow the following link to the CalRecycle
site to obtain more information.
Businesses Make a Difference
Inglewood generates more than 120,000 tons
of solid waste every year and more than half
of that amount comes from businesses. The
Solid Waste Management Act of 1989 (AB
939) requires that each municipality reduce
the amount of waste sent to the landfills 50
percent by the year 2000.
The Public Works Department’s Environmental
Services Division is working to develop
programs to help businesses recycle. Your business
could reduce disposal costs and protect natural
resources by recycling and practicing waste
prevention. Together we will make a difference!
Reduce Waste
Waste prevention is something your business
can do today that can significantly reduce
the amount of waste that is disposed at local
landfills. Waste prevention is any practice that
causes a reduction in the generation of waste.
Here are some simple and inexpensive ideas:
• Make double-sided copies
• Email or post information on an announcement
board
• Use ceramic mugs for coffee
• Reuse large envelopes, boxes and packaging
materials
• Use scrap paper for notes
• Buy products that can be recycled
Please contact the Public Works Department,
Environmental Services Administrator, for
more waste prevention ideas for your business.
Recycle Recycle Image Green
A representative from the City’s waste hauler,
Consolidated Disposal Service (CDS), will be
happy to assist you in the development of a
program for your business to recycle. CDS
recycling experts will analyze the amount
and type of recyclables in your waste stream.
CDS will recommend a recycling program that
meets your needs, based on the results of the
waste audit. Recycling services are provided
at no cost to CDS customers and may result
in lower trash collection costs.
After you have decided to participate in
the recycling program, CDS can help you to
implement it. Your business will be provided
with printed materials and CDS staff will be
available to present the new recycling program
to your employees.
Close the Loop
It is equally important is to purchase recycled
content products.
When you purchase goods with recycled
content, you help to create a demand for the
materials collected in our recycling program.
Buying recycled content products is important
to develop and maintain markets for the
materials diverted from landfill disposal. A
wide variety of recycled content products
are available. Look for this symbol when
purchasing them. Questions
If you need assistance starting a recycling or
solid waste reduction program at your business
or have any other solid waste and recycling
