Hawthorne Happenings
News for the City of Good
Neighbors from an Old Guy
Named Norb Huber
State of the City
Want to know what is really happening
in Hawthorne? Well, you won’t
find it here in my column, but you
will find out what’s happening if you attend
the Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce’s
State of the City Luncheon to be held this
year on March 7th. Mayor Vargas will be
giving his 3rd update to the residents and
stakeholders of Hawthorne. The Citizen of
the Year Award will be announced at the event
also. Tickets can be obtained by calling the
Chamber office at (310) 676-1163.
Citizen of the Year
Nominations
Nominations are now being accepted
for the Citizen of the Year Award that is
presented annually at the State of the City
Luncheon featuring Mayor Alex Vargas.
Hawthorne has always been blessed with
an abundance of business owners, community
activists and other volunteers through
faith-based organizations, service clubs and
other agencies who have given of their time,
resources and talents to improve our quality
of life and indeed make us the City of Good
Neighbors. However, they are non-residents.
Beginning last year, the Hawthorne Chamber
of Commerce board of directors expanded
the criteria for the Citizen of the Year Award
to include those individuals who have operated
or worked for businesses, or served as
volunteers with organizations, service clubs,
nonprofit agencies or faith-based groups in
Hawthorne for at least 10 years. Nominees
must have made lasting contributions to the
betterment of our community through their
volunteer service to help others or to promote
charitable causes that have benefited
all segments of the community. Last year’s
recipient, Jan Vogel, certainly fit the
criteria. The deadline for nominations
is Tuesday February 19th. You may
write a letter nominating someone
and either send it or drop it off at the
Hawthorne Chamber office, 12519
Crenshaw Blvd, Hawthorne. Or you
may email it to the Selection Committee
Chairman Tom Quintana at quprs@
aol.com. Past Citizen of the Year recipients
will meet to make the selection.
I went to see The Mule with my old lady last
week. I don’t look as old as Clint Eastwood,
do I? If you do go to see the movie, make
sure you stay for the closing song, “Don’t
Let the Old Man In” which was written by
Toby Keith. Clint was playing golf with
Toby and told Toby that he doesn’t let the
old man in even though Clint is 88 years
young. Look up the lyrics some time. I’ve
been called the “old man” for a long time.
I just try to keep on going, I try not to “let
the old man in”.
Water into Wine
This past Sunday’s Gospel reading for the
second Sunday in Epiphany tells of Jesus’
first miracle. We find it in the second chapter
of the Gospel of John. Jesus was at a wedding
reception in the town of Cana and his
mother took him aside to tell him they had
a big problem. The wedding host was out
of wine! Wow! Can you imagine throwing
a big wedding reception and running out
of cold ones? Jesus shows his divinity in
taking care of the problem. We read from
an excerpt taken from Tabletalk, a daily
devotional: “Throughout the Scriptures, wine
is symbolic of God’s grace and our resultant
joy. Unlike water, wine is unnecessary
for life. Its superfluity is a picture of God’s
superabundant grace. That is to say, our
Lord is the kind of God who loves to give
