Women’s Tenis League to be Formed One of my loyal readers requested that I write a little snippet about the formation of a Women’s Tennis League. The first meeting is scheduled for Saturday, January14, 2017 @ Holly Park at  7:00 am. This is an open invitation to all ladies 18 years and older. For more information please contact Lisa Aguila @ 310-626-2115. Tennis is such a great sport to learn and enjoy. I used to play when my daughter started playing in middle school. It’s a good workout and such a fun way to burn some calories. Start the new year off right with a little exercise and have some fun with your Hawthorne neighbors. Emotions and Christmas It seems as if the Christmas season is always full of emotions, some good and some sad. Life goes on regardless of whether it is the season to be jolly or not. It appears that last week there was a murder suicide on Jefferson in Hawthorne. I spoke to several neighbors of the family and they are in shook and dismay since they had known the family members for over 30 years. Why? they were asking. It all seems so unnecessary. They could not understand why such a bad thing could happen in their neighborhood. There are a lot of things that God only knows the why to. We are left to ponder. All I know is out of our distress and dismay, God has given us hope. Death and sin are all around us, but the baby born in Bethlehem 2000 years ago has brought us hope, forgiveness and life. That is what Christmas is about. No expensive gifts, no beautiful music, no delicious food, no case of cold ones can ever give us the joy and hope we have in Christ. Bad things happen. Bad things happen to good people. Regardless of what challenges we face in this life, he have the assurance that nothing can stand in the way of God’s love for his people. That is the greatest gift you can ever receive this Christmas. John Baker’s Celebration of Life As I reported last week, lifelong Hawthorne champion, John Baker passed away from a heart attack at his home. Many people will miss him. John’s Celebration of Life is scheduled for January 14, from 12-4 at the Hawthorne VFW which is located at 4563 W. 131st Street just east of Ramona. Christmas Trivia Too much talk about death, let’s try a little trivia to lighten things up a bit: • P r e s i d e n t Te d d y R o o s eve l t , a n environmentalist, banned Christmas trees from the White House in 1901, • It is estimated that the single “White Christmas” by Irving Berlin is the best selling single of all time, with over 100 million sales worldwide.[6] • There are approximately 21,000 Christmas tree farms in the United States. In 2008, nearly 45 million Christmas trees were planted, adding to the existing 400 million trees. • The first person to decorate a Christmas tree was reportedly the Protestant reformer Martin Luther (1483-1546). According to legend, he was so moved by the beauty of the stars shining between the branches of a fir tree, he brought home an evergreen tree and decorated it with candles to share the image with his children. • Approximately 30-35 million real (living) Christmas trees are sold each year in the U.S • Christmas is a contraction of “Christ’s Mass,” which is derived from the Old English  Cristes mæsse  (first recorded in 1038). The letter “X” in Greek is the first letter of Christ, and “Xmas” has been used as an abbreviation for Christmas since the mid 1500s. In 1962, the first Christmas postage stamp was issued in the United States. • In Germany,  Heiligabend, or Christmas Eve, is said to be a magical time when the pure in heart can hear animals talking. Finally, have a Good one. Have a Merry one. Have a Blessed one. And last but not least, have a Cold one! (Seriously, don’t drink and get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle this season or this coming year, and never try to write a newspaper column and drink at the same time, you just end up writing gobble goop that no one can understand.) Stay sober my friends. Merry Christmas! • Contact email: norbhuber@gmail.com (If you do enjoy my weekly column, please shoot me an email. I love to hear from my readers.)
