Stamping Pool Decks Playwright Ong Receives Inglewood Grant to Stage Dream of the Red Chamber The City of Inglewood has awarded an Inglewood Growing Artists Performed Project (IGAPP) grant to playwright Henry Ong to stage his six-hour adaptation of the famed Chinese classic Dream of the Red Chamber. The play will be presented in the Inglewood Amphitheater in Edward Vincent Park in 2017. The story, based on Tsao Hsueh-chin’s romance novel, is a blend of realism and the supernatural that details the decline of the Chia family during the early Ching Dynasty (1644-1912). The novel’s theme centers on the love story between protagonist Pao-yu and his cousin Black Jade. Ong called it a “thrill to receive the grant. “It has been a dream of mine to do this epic in its entirety,” he said. “I believe the Inglewood Amphitheater is the perfect location to stage this universal fable—a story that transcends boundaries where everyone, regardless of ethnicity or age, can participate and enjoy.” Ong will assemble a core group of professional actors, with area residents also portraying some of the play’s more than 70 roles drawn from the novel’s 30 main and 400 minor characters. “We are excited to have a playwright of Mr. Ong’s caliber share his talent and expertise in an art project that not only brings a revered Chinese classic to the City of Inglewood, but will also involve the diverse communities living in and around Inglewood and highlight our beautiful facilities,” said City of Inglewood Public Art Program Manager Helen Lessick • The deadline for Classified Ad submission and payment is Noon on Tuesday to appear in Thursday’s paper.
