By Joanna Brody, Brody Public Relations Nearly 300 volunteers from The Smile Generation, Environmental Charter Schools, organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the Inglewood community have teamed up to build a new community playground at Environmental Charter Middle School - Inglewood. Designed in September when students from the school put crayons to paper to draw their dream playground, the new playspace includes a revolving ring to hang from and a rock-climbing wall. In keeping with its focus on experiential learning and using the environment as a way to both engage students and prepare them to become leaders in their communities, the new playground area also includes a number of sustainable features such as gardening spaces, recycling and composting bins, and shade structures. ECMS - Inglewood is a free, public middle school in South Los Angeles that offers students a small, caring educational environment supporting their transition from elementary school to a college preparatory high school. The rigorous academic program prepares students for a college-prep high school and places an emphasis on social responsibility. Until today, the campus had no playground equipment. Without a safe place to play, ECMS students were not optimally developing essential physical, social and cognitive skills. Youths who do not have safe places to play outside spend much more time indoors, in front of a screen, rather than interacting with others, taking calculated risks, and developing physical coordination and strength. The new playground brings more than 300 kids in Inglewood one step closer to having the childhood they deserve. “The Smile Generation is committed to bringing smiles to people’s faces and we were excited to partner with KaBOOM! again to create a place for the children to play and a place for them to smile,” said We Serve Manager Kyle Guerin. “We are thrilled that we had a hand in helping the Environmental Charter Middle School build a play area and that we were able to serve Inglewood community members with the on-site dental clinic that provided donated dentistry to those who do not have access to dental care.” As part of the construction, volunteers assembled the playground from start to finish in less than six hours. They mixed and poured thousands of pounds of concrete and moved enough safety surfacing to cover nearly 9 NBA-sized basketball courts. Inglewood Councilman Ralph Franklin spent the entire day on campus moving mulch and building raised garden beds with the volunteers. Sixty-second District Assemblymember Steven Bradford and Inglewood Mayor James T.
