This year it will be held at the civic center in front of city hall from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Food and a lively program will include presentations from the police and fire. A chili cook-off is planned. The Holy Park Homeowners Association, the Tongan Community, the 360 Community and the Ramona Neighborhood Association all will be sponsoring the event. So, come out and enjoy the fact that we can be out at night in Hawthorne. Back To School In August Yes, it’s almost that time of the year already to go back to school. The Centinela Valley Union High School District begins classes on Tuesday, August 19. The Hawthorne School District begins on Monday, August 25 for K-8 and August 27 for the Math and Science Academy. Wiseburn kids get an extra week of summer since their schools do not begin until September 3 following the Labor Day holiday. As a teacher I like my summer vacation. So, I’m happy that Long Beach Poly doesn’t start until that same day, September 3. One of the many perks of teaching is having a long summer vacation. Here Today, Gone Tomorrow The old saying goes like this, “there are two things certain in life, death and taxes”. I think we all can agree that this is a true statement. We will always owe taxes and we all are going to die some time. It’s that uncertainty of not knowing when and how we are going to stop living that causes us to worry a little bit. The life expectance in the US is 79 and for us living in California it’s 80. Most of us plan on living at least that long. But, you never know. This past Sunday, a 20 year old swimmer up at Venice Beach was struck by a lightening bolt and was killed. A colleague of mine from my school was 43 and passed away in his sleep recently. I attended a lady’s memorial last Saturday who had lived a wonderful life and died peacefully at age 85. A 94 year old friend from my church was just told by his doctor he has stomach cancer. We have no way of knowing when our time will come. God gives us our days to live. Life is precious. Each day may be our last. Death simply has a way of reminding us of the brevity of life. We are reminded to hug our loved ones and tell them how much we love them. We may not have that opportunity tomorrow. (I could add that you should give your old lady a kiss and have a cold one, but some people think I’m an alcoholic, so just tell her you love her and take her to Starbucks instead.) Dodger Baseball and Congress Now it looks like it’s going to take action from our congress to break the stalemate between cable television providers that is still preventing most of Southern California from viewing any Dodger games. The older folks in thier rest homes look forward to watching their beloved Dodgers every evening. Right now, the only thing they can do is listen to the games on the radio. Hall of Fame DVD’s Available If you would like a copy of the Hawthorne Historical Society 2014 Hall of Fame DVD then please visit the Society’s website at: hawthornehistorical.com. The videos are a very inspiring glimpse of the five honorees and the music of Hawthorne. The DVD’s would make a great gift for any resident that has been here for a while.
